Which motorbikes can I drive on a standard licence?

One for the 2 wheeled guru's.

If I wanted to get a motorbike, what's the largest I could get without having to go through the nause of lessons and testing for a full bike license.

Thanks in advance

Re: Biggest bike with std license

Now why didn't I think of that... maybe as:
A - it's in German
B - Presumes you understand the system
C - It's in German.
D - Doesn't answer the question I.E- Honda 250, Suzuki 125 etc

E - Did I mention the German thing

50cc scooters are possible on a standard licence but they're a bit wheezy; you'll need to do a short course for 125cc - Vespas and the like - and an extended course for 125cc+ beefy bikes.

The question was pretty vague to start with.
A: Yeah, it's in German, or there are tiny links on the bottom, you can switch to French or Italian, giving you about 99.999% of linguistic coverage of this pretty country.
B: No, it actually helps you to understand the system.
D: As long as you know the power output and volume of your engine, it pretty much answers the question indeed.

I went through this motorbike-driving-license thing not such a long time ago, and i found this page quite helpful. YMMV.

Re: Biggest bike with std license

Assuming that you may drive a car (Cat 'B') you can drive a scooter (up to 125ccm) after doing an 8h course- no test required. Everything else comes with 12h lessons and a test

Re: Biggest bike with std license

It depends very much on what it says in your license. In the olden days, if you got a license to drive a car, it often came with an automatic motorcycle license up to a certain engine size as well. This was discontinued in the 1970s and 1980s, but those who held these licenses had them "grandfathered". My father (license issued before 1960) thus is allowed to ride, in the EU and Switzerland, any motorbike that is road legal, even though he never rode a single motorbike in his life. I on the other hand may only ride motorcycles up to 50cc = small-engined scooters.

So what does your license look like on the flip (back) side of the card?

It doesn't say anything Tom, that's why I asked. Symbols for cars, trucks buses and trailers but no motorbikes

I wanted the answer simplified and in English, not a lesson in demographic's, understanding the system, or to decide what of machine I should look at... your in IT right.

Re: Which motorbikes can I drive on a standard licence?

A few words of warning: having driven both 50cc and 125cc - They are great fun, handy for getting around town and a bit outside & affordable.

They are also dangerous. Any mistake - yours or other drivers can result in a serious accident. be careful.

Re: Which motorbikes can I drive on a standard licence?

really? Well I never ... thanks for sharing your experience.

And I suppose if on the other hand you ride a 1000cc motorbike it is perfectly safe? No need to answer.

If you use Google as your search engine, and your PC is configured in English, it should ask you do you want the website translated to English, regardless of the browser.
