| Hi,
I got a letter stating that they want to take away my license. it doesnt mention the duration or the alternative to pay a fine. I am currently driving under a US license as i'm only here for a year. The catch is that i go back (permanently) next week. My concern is that if i tell them i'm leaving maybe they'll say to pay a fine instead. Should i just send them my US license before leaving? I gotta call the guy monday and try to work this out.
Any thoughts?
help is much appreciated! | |

In Switzerland, taking away ones drivers license is always
in addition to paying a fine. Most likely you already paid the corresponding fine.
Swiss authorities cannot take away your US-issued license AFAIK, but they can ban you from driving in Switzerland for a certain period of time (e.g. 3 months).
Just let them know that you don't have a Swiss drivers license and most likely they'll ban you for a while, but that won't affect you since you'll be leaving the country anyway.
EDIT: I don't know how good your German is, so please don't feel offended, but are you sure that they want to take away your license? I just noticed that you mention that you've been here for almost a year and since the letter doesn't mention any duration, it might be a about the fact that you must exchange your US drivers license after 12 months...
