Re: Alcohol test kit required for driving in France - From 1st July 2012

The UK ferries are still pushing people to buy them. I've just booked a trip with DFDS and on the bottom of my booking confirmation is a £1 off voucher to buy them on board. Also has the notice "From 1st July 2012 all vehicles travelling in France must, by law, be carrying approved breathalysers." Guess they don't read Motorbiker. Typical French muddled thinking - yes you should have them, but it's okay for the moment if you don't. Are the French police going to be checking if you do or only if they happen to stop you for something else?

As already mentioned, this requirement is DEAD.

My guess is the ferries are trying to unload their stock (which will go bad if not sold). Just ignore them.

Re: Alcohol test kit required for driving in France - From 1st July 2012

I intend to as we've already picked up a couple cheaper than they are selling them for. It's the sort of scare tactics that annoy me. Okay, yes technically it is still the law in France that you should have them, but as you say Verbier it smacks more of offloading stock than anything else. The question is how long will they continue to sell them? Will they renew their supplies to screw people out of more money? I fear so because I doubt many people in the UK have been following the whole on-off saga.

Re: Alcohol test kit required for driving in France - From 1st July 2012

I'm going to france in the last week of March and from what I read it is mandatory to buy the alcohol tester.
But when I went to buy it, the woman told me that the law change on the 15th of February.

So now it's not mandatory anymore?

You don't need them. You can forget about the whole thing.

well, yes you should have them, but nothing will happen if you do not, the original fine was only €11 anyway for not having them.

see above from the relevant department "The CNSR's recommendation is the continue making breathalyzers mandatory in every vehicle (and now possibly even 50cc mopeds), but not to fine anyone if they don't have it."

In other words dont bother...... and welcome to the forum.
