Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

Just a reminder to all you energy biscuits out there... Switzerland and France are exchanging details of traffic-offending vehicles as from this month.

You have been warned. Now back to normal programming...

Certainly the only cameras I've seen in Ticino are red-light cameras.
In Ticino I have come accross the occassional temporary camera fixed half way up a lamp-post on straight main roads.
Getting off the motorway and heading towards Biasco was one in particular.
You don't even notice them until you think the weather has started lightening.

I am driving a UK registered car with all my UK identity for this purpose and in the UK for driving I am using all my Swiss identity.

Do you mean you have both a Swiss and UK driving license?

Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

On the big autobahns what is the maximum speed?

Ive often done 140+ but never seen a camera... only to have heaps of cars speed past me.

Same as on small autobahns.

This kind of question makes me wonder if people should be allowed to drive cars at all...

It depends - east/west or north/south?

The cars speeding past you were undoubtedly black. Black cars absorb the rays from the speed camera, so they can't get ticketed. Black cars will be banned in Switzerland from 2012. Driving at night has the same effect.

If you really must know AbFab and it seems you freakin do, I've clocked 20 years behind the wheel and never had even a scrape. When I got here I drove at 110km/h and then 120. I soon noticed everyone overtaking me! so I sped up as well.

In the 20 years did you not notice any circular signs with numbers in them?
Your friends who leg it at 140 have passed the next phase-they know where the camaras are too.

Well, except at border crossings you won't find a single sign which displays the general autobahn speed limit in the whole country.

But the one you are on is the one that is relevant!
You don't see all the rules of the road posted up either but are expected to have at least a fleeting interest in them.

Right-left makes no diff to me, except using the other hand to change the radio station (and gears). No seriously I should familiarise myself with the signs here.

Has anyone heard the radio cut-in of the "ghost driver" (ie driver on the wrong side)? My wife told me about it.

Oh, 20 years behind the wheel must have been quite uncomfortable. But in view of that sort of experience, there is no speed limit for you anywhere in Switzerland. Have fun...

Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

Very interesting thread...

Are these legal in CH?

This new model is completely undetectable, they will have to stop you and search the car for it.

Interestingly enough, there are no signs prohibiting stealing either - not even at the border.

Yes, I have to say it's totally unconspicuous and blends in perfectly with its "windscreen camo" livery.

Weeeeell...this guy has it a bit obvious but I've seen some that are hidden on the side of the central panel, and therefore the police needs to get in your car.

Anyway I understand with your answer that is not legal in CH, right?
