Hey guys,

From Zurich I usually take the A1 up until Birrfeld and then hook a right onto the A3 to Basel.



The question for those who usually stay on the A1 towards Bern is what is the traffic like on a daily basis? because that may be my regular commute if we move house

I've driven up that stretch of the A1 a few times and its usually awful, but then its riddled with roadworks. The A3 in comparison is very smooth all the way from that junction to St Jakob. Also any idea when those roadworks are scheduled to complete?

www.autobahnschweiz.ch gives you an overview of the current building sites on the Swiss Highway network and the expected completion dates.

There seems to be one big site between Lenzburg and Birrfeld and according to the project webpage (http://www.astra.admin.ch/autobahnsc...x.html?lang=de), completion is expected in 2013.

Furthermore between Härkingen und Wiggertal, where the A1 and the A2 overlap, they are extending the road from 4 to 6 lanes, building started in 2011 and is expected to finish in 2014. (http://www.astra.admin.ch/autobahnsc...x.html?lang=de)

Many thanks tomberli, that being the case, I would probably go the long way around i.e. A3>A2 to avoid the daily misery
