Zurich - Zug area: Drive or train

I've just been offered a job near Zug (in a village one stop out).

I've been living in Zurich for a couple of years and want to stay in central Zurich for personal reasons (even the low taxes in Zug don't tempt me away from my friends here ).

I've not had experience of driving here and I'm not sure how busy the road gets, particularly going from Zurich to Zug.

Because the office is not in Zug, the commute by train will take up to 50 mins on the slow train. In theory Google maps says that it will take 30 mins from near Enge, which seems a lot quicker.

I'm looking to live in Wiedikon or Enge as I figure they are well situated for both trains and for the motorway.

Advice gratefully received on the length and quality of the drive!

Thanks

I have a couple of colleagues who drive to Rotkreuz from that side of Zurich, I think it takes them 25-30 minutes. Most of the traffic is going the other way. If your office is in Steinhausen (which I am guessing from the "village one stop out by train"), it should take about the same time, maybe a few minutes less.

Re: Zurich - Zug area: Drive or train

Im assuming your office is near Baar as that is the stop before Zug generally from Zurich. Maybe you can fill us in.

From Enge it looks like you can get there in 22 minutes quickest and up to 45 minutes depending on what train you catch.

I dont think you will catch bad traffic but for me the decision depends on whether you have a car now? So do you have to buy one? is your new office really close to the train station? and whats the parking situation going to be like at your office and home?

If I was young, no kids and settled in Zurich I would definitely stay there. Zug is for us older folks.

It sounds like your mind is made up on driving, but when you said "50 minutes on the slow train" I thought S9 and Steinhausen. My two cents are that if you ever take the train, the nice thing about it is that the commuters in that line are in the other direction, and you have an nice quiet train trip where you can read a book, get work done, look out the window and usually have four seats to yourself (at least that was my case six months ago). So even if it takes a while to drive, your commute will be a lot less stressful than normal commutes should you take the train if you're talking about the s9.

Monthly public transport pass in Zug

Dear All

I have a query. Can the monthly public transport pass be purchased only online (delivery time being 1 week) or is it also possible to buy on the spot from any train station?

https://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and-tickets.html

Thanks!

On the spot from any station, they give you a temporary pass which you can use immediately and is exactly the same as the card that will arrive within a week at your house.
