What does it cost to get rid of a car?

This is a hypothetical. What if I don't want to sell my car? What if I just want to get rid of it?

I assume I take it to a junkyard (which, from my searches, is correct). Does anyone know (approximately) how much a junkyard charges...now, in 2012?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a junkyard or two in the Zurich-area?

Thanks in advance.

I believe if you can drive the car there it's free.... Older cars like BMW's, Audi's etc can be sold for export even if they are fairly rough with 300k on the clock!

Really?! Is it worthwhile to consider mechanics who may buy the car off me (nominally) just for the still-working parts?

1) type this w/o quotation marks into google: "autoankauf site:.ch"
2) Call any of those numbers listed

Re: What does it cost to get rid of a car?

So I have one that says if I can drive it in, its free. One that says (s)he had to pay. And one that says to keep searching myself.

I am looking for any recent (within the last year or two), personal experiences with such a situation. If there is a specific place that you recommend, I am definitely interested in that as well.

Thanks.

It is the best answer we can get you. As long as you not tell us Make/Model/Year/km/General condition of your car it is just wild guessing.
You may have to pay for this:

but get money for that:

Also see here, here or here.
The "Autoankauf" people are those that put a business card in door/window of your car. They say, they will buy nearly anything, no question asked, no MFK needed. Why not give a call to one of those? They can get you a quote instantly. You never had such a card? Perhaps your car is really worth nothing at all.

I totally disagree. If people have personal experiences, it is no longer "wild guessing". <full stop>.

I already know my car is worth something. I drive it everyday, about 100km per day, and it is perfectly fine...passed the MFK less than a year ago. I could sell it no problem.

BUT, that wasn't the point of this thread. Such a question (that I originally posed) doesn't need my specifics to be adequately answered. And besides, it would be nice if this thread was useful to someone in the future and not SO pinpointed to MY specific case that it is not actually relevant to anyone else.

I understand what you would like me to do. And I appreciate your input.

Now please, lets get back "on topic" to personal experiences of getting rid of a car in Switzerland...where it is possible to do so...and what you were charged for such a service.

Contact the local "Strassenverkehrsamt" and seek information there. There is no single solution for whole of Switzerland.

In canton Neuchatel, for example, there is a fixed fee of 150CHF for scraping a car.

Re: What does it cost to get rid of a car?

i may or may not know someone that may or may not have driven over to france and dumped his car in front of the gates of a car scrap yard after hours, and removed the plates and wrecked the engine and chassis numbers.. and he maybe left the keys in the car.

or i could be lying and made it all up... officer

Re: What does it cost to get rid of a car?

I scrapped my UK car 1 month after I arrived in CH. I found an Advertising in either 20 min or blick am Abend, and called the junkyard. They came with a truck towed the car away, and gave me 100 chuffs.

Its almost 4 years ago now, I dont know who it was anymore.

Doc.

Thank you. This is a very good example of exactly the kind of information I was looking for.
O.K. Here is my information. Never paid a single penny, even got something back. Used the Autoankauf people, dealer, never a scrap yard. One vehicle was nowhere near running condition, serious motor damage.

If you want to get rid of your car fast (within hours/few days) and want some money back go with the Autoankauf guys. A lot of them around, so you can really get the best offer. This could be from 0 to a thousand and something. Still, there is no guarantee that they want your car. You will never have to pay this guys. I cannot give you a particular for any of those guys, there are too many of those and they pop up and go from one week to another.

If none of the Autoankauf guys wants your car, or you are uneasy because your car may be put on sale with 150k less on the clock, or to not fancy to call some strange mobile number, or want some official documentaion, or whatever... Google for this: "Autoverwertung site:.ch" (once again w/o quotes) or go to www.vasso.ch. You will find a lot of scrap yards / auto recycling centers. Even those may give you some money for your car (which could be even more than you get from the Autoankauf guys).

Two quotes from saldo 19/2005 "It is an open market, there is no single price for salvaging a car." says Walter Frauenknecht, Swiss Auto Scrap Yard and Recycling Association / VASSO.
TCS-Expert Schwizer thinks that salvaging cost up to 250.- are reasonable.

Now, to a concrete offer: "We pay 100.- for your complete car". (So far all my post were about giving you some tips and hint how you get the most from your car, now I also raised the lower range "considerably" ;-) )

You asked: "Is it worthwhile to consider mechanics who may buy the car off me?". My answer is and was: You are one single phone call of 5 minutes away to find out if you may get 1500.- for your car.

At the end of the day, it is your car, your story, and your experience, and your job to find someone who wants to give you money for your car.

Dibs on your car selling story. Will make a multi million movie out of it. Working title: "Hang, where did I over sell my car?" Any actor preferences?

Re: What does it cost to get rid of a car?

If your car is a bit good, I met and talked to a guy that buys broken or wrecked cars in Switzerland and Germany. His firm then takes them to one of two other countries, where they rebuild them or make two out of one. Then since the car had orginal Swiss papers or German he has no import duties. Which then they can bring them back into Switzerland or Germany and resale them with no problems. So there is really alot of possibilities, besides junking it.
