illegal U-turn

Ok, hands up I’m guilty… a week ago Sunday, 7:00am, not another car on the road ( or so I thought ) I crossed a double white line essentially making an illegal U-turn to access the underground parking near where I work.
Unfortunately the road was not empty and just as I’m getting out of my car in the underground a police cruiser comes down the ramp. The officer was very nice, asked for my license and just explained he had to send the paperwork in and I would receive a notification at home.
Does anyone know what that notification is likely to say? , fixed fine?

Those few words just rippled through my Canton like a tsunami.

Re: illegal U-turn

Ouch. This is likely to be very expensive -- the offense will be crossing a solid white line, and the fine is around CHF500-.

I made the same mistake when I first arrived in Switzerland, turning left into a car park and crossing over a solid white line with a police car behind me. I was let off with a stern talking-to, but I discovered afterwards that the penalties for this are very severe.

I thought it was 500 CHF for a white line...if this was a double, wouldn't the fine be 1,000 CHF?

Then you'll be fined for not producing signed documents from the canton that you're allowed to work on Sunday.

Old but food for thought. Not very comforting in your case I'm afraid.

not comforting at all.. especially as it's in German. I don't speak/read a word of German and this is the English forum.

Do please try to abide by the forum rules, I would hate to have to report you to a mod.

I thought you'd be able to read 'picture language' and the numbers... Sorry mate. This is the bit you need. Sperrflächen / Sicherheitslinien I'd imagine that as, in your case, it was only creating a 'potential' danger as opposed to an 'imminent' one, you might well get away with the minimum.

Re: illegal U-turn

It was about 5 years ago so prices may have gone up since - I crossed a double white on rue du Rhône to park on the opposite side of the road. I got caught & ticketed by a bike patrol. I don't remember the amount but it wasn't outrageous.

It's been discussed before. There's no fixed fine for a white line. This goes to court, so considering the circumstances you'll get a reasonable fine and totally unreasonable court proceeding fee. You should plan 500 CHF or thereabouts.

The law does not make a explicit distinction between double and single white lines. The judge will have to determine these things: indent, guiltiness, threat to others (actual and abstract). The last one, abstract thread, may bite you as a double line is normally where there is an higher abstract threat (before a hill, corner). My low end guess: if you were really careful and there was no actual thread to others: 200.- fine + 150.- court fee.

Re: illegal U-turn

It takes a special sort of person to fine someone for crossing a white line on an empty street on a Sunday.

I hope he gets no sex for 40 years!
