Re: Cycle friendly cities in the world - Basel rates #11

My problem with Basel is you still share many streets with cars. In Leiden where I used to live, the cycle lanes are mostly separated from the cars with traffic signals to control crossroads.

I agree with the poster who mentioned about idiot cyclists in NL with respect to cars. So many of them cut you up on the inside and expect you to brake at the last minute, or ride down dark streets with no lights and dark clothes.

When I used to ride a bike in NL, I always made sure a car driver had seen me before I made a move - mindful of how difficult it can be.

Cheers,
Nick

It may not have the infrastructure of Portland (it's getting there), but Vancouver has a great cycling culture. Ottawa is very good for cycling too: many paths (not necessarily on roads).

I am still waiting for my bike to be shipped so that I can ride around Zurich. I'll have to learn to watch out for trams.

I've been in Zurich for a year and am very pleased with the cycling territory here. Can't vouch for Basel, but it would have to go some to beat the variety of Zurich's landscape. You can keep it on the flats by the lake or work out a nearly infinite number of rides through the hilly countryside. Coming from the Louisiana flatland, I find that pretty awesome.
