I have been doing some research but did not find anything that answers my question.

I have a chance to buy a van VW LT35. In fact. They almost give the van away for free. The van is 2000 model. Last MFK and abgas was performed in May 2010 (more then two years ago) so everything is expired. It is "ab platz".

As I know the condition and history of the van and also the mechanic that has maintained it I am not worried at all about the fact that all is expired or the condition of the van.

The question is as it is more then two years since MFK / Abgas it all has to be done again. How does it work?

1) I register it first in my name, wait for an appointment to do MFK.
2) I have to do MFK/abgas first and then register. If so how do I book MFK.

If it is like 1) Can I use it until I receive an invitation or is the car "grounded" as it is more the 2 years since last MFK/abgas and not allowed to be used at all?

If it is "grounded". Can I still drive to a garage to do abgas and MFK or how do I get it there?

I just bought a motorbike yesterday, MFK over 2 years old no problem got the plates, I asked & was told I may get an invite in October.

The MFK does not have a fixed validity, I have waited 5 years on an older car once, some people wait 10 years it all depends.....

Just go & get an abgas ASAP.

It really depends on the Canton. Bern is very tough and insists on an MFK very soon, maybe Basel is easier.

There are heavy fines for driving without a current Ab-Gas test certificate.

If the Canton refuses to register the van without an MFK, you will have to rent the number plates from the Canton, on a daily basis, which includes tax and 3rd party basic insurance. http://www.baselland.ch/tagesausw-htm.288230.0.html

It depends how out of date, the fine is quite low for upto a month or upto 3 months IIRC.

Not having a current exhaust control certificate for:

a. up to 1 Month brings an on the spot fine of CHF 40

b. more than 1 Month, but less than 3 Months, fine is CHF 100

c. more than 3, but less than 6 Months fine is CHF 200

More than 6 months results in a hearing before a judge.

So if I understand it correct.

I can drive the van as soon as I have registered and done the abgas test even if I am waiting for MFK

you'll find out exactly what the score is when they process the change of owner and issue a new grey card for the vehicle.

in simple terms, they will then issue an invitation for an MFK and that's it.

for the exhaust check, take it to a garage and see what is needed for MFK and get the test done and card stamped then.
