Buying tickets with coins / notes for Zürich trams

Hi,

Just arrived in Zurich for a short work placement and need a little help on how the trams work.

It's probably a silly question but can you pay for your tickets using notes as well as coins? I saw the coin slot and the credit card slot but was unsure of where the notes go, if it is possible to use notes.

If only I knew some German at this point and could just ask someone!

Thanks - stegar

Coins and notes are accepted:

and welcome to the forum.

Updated machines at SBB S-Bahn stations

The ZVV has commissioned the SBB to adapt about 200 new SBB ticket machines within the regional network especially to suit the requirements of ZVV customers. The operation of all ZVV ticket machines, including the new generation ones, will therefore remain consistent throughout the region.
Thanks to the new features, you will be able to get to your ticket more quickly and choose from a wider range of options. You will see most commonly used ZVV tickets straight away on the start screen. As before you can pay at the machines with coins and notes, but now you can also pay by debit or credit card.

Re: Zurich trams

Thank you for the quick response, the diagram in the pdf is very helpful. The problem is I still can't work out from the picture where the notes go . Number 4 is showing where the coins are inserted but could you point out where the note slot is please? As I have just arrived all I have are notes, no change as yet.

Re: Zurich trams

Any shop will change money into coins. There is the SBB vending machine as well.

Interesting thread for you:

Are the CHF 100, 200, or 1000 bills widely accepted in Switzerland?

Re: Buying tickets with coins / notes for Zürich trams

In the pictures you posted I can see the note slots! Just can't see it in the pdf image or on the newer machines. I guess I could find a shop and get some coins, but my lack of German may limit me in asking for the right change needed for the machine...

Thank you for your help. Hopefully I will arrive at work on time tomorrow.

Just say:

Sprechen Sie auch Englisch ?

Do you also speak English ?

The answer will likely be a yes, and your issues can be solved with ease.

Ah, when I arrived I spoke no German either.
I asked for 'kleingeld fuer die bus' and they understood me. They might have understood me better if I'd asked in English but........ anyway, they gave me coins.

Thank you.

Had a more detailed look around and it makes sense that they don't take notes. Would be a magnet for thieves and the machines would run out of change pretty quickly.

I usually walk everywhere back in England but here the office is too far away and I wouldn't want to walk it in this heat.

Re: Buying tickets with coins / notes for Zürich trams

I took the liberty to snap a few pictures of the validator machine and the ZVV machine ( from my parish ).

Select Welcome for English on the machines.
