New car stereo

The CD part of our car radio is no longer working (although the radio is fine)
so we would like to replace it. However we are not sure who to go to or if it
is easy enough to replace by ourselves.

We are obviously willing to pay but only want a basic CD player/ radio so don't
want to spend a fortune! The car is a VW Golf (mark 5)if that makes a
difference.

Can any suggest someone who could advise us on a stereo and help fit it?
English is best but we could get by in German if necessary. The Thalwil/ Horgen area would be best but Zurich is fine.

Thanks.

Re: New car stereo

Well, you have the following options if you don't want to go to Amag for an original replacement:

1. Either you go to a junkyard and ask for the same head-unit in serviceable condition;
2. Or you buy an unviersal head unit (for 200-300 Euros you can get one with lots of features: DVD, GPS, PiP, rear camera ready, etc.) and a facia adapter.
Careful though if you decide to go for the universal HU, you may also need an adapter for the connectors!!! Most of the HU come with these adapters, but you better make sure what kind of connector your car has (I'm 95% sure is an ISO connector) and if the HU comes with ISO connectors and/or adapters.
Talking about the work, it's not rocket science and on top of that youtube is full of tutorials.

Re: New car stereo

Thank you for the information.

Although you suggest it's easy enough to do we would still rather get someone who knows what they are doing so can anyone suggest the best place to go. Usual story, back home we would go to somewhere like Halfords so is there anywhere along those lines to take it to?

Re: New car stereo

Curious if you ever found someone to go to. I would like some stereo work done on my car, but am not sure who to take it to.

Thanks,

Re: New car stereo

Just replaced the radio in my car last year. Cheap as hell these days. Got it at microspot for 100 SFR. Its a Kenwood and has great sound with blue tooth and all (phone connect) But no longer sold by microspot (pity). But this is a simular model with dab: https://www.microspot.ch/msp/de/audi...dab-0001025895

Replacing is also no problem. only need to rehook the power speaker cable and the antenna. Kenwood has a decent install guide too. Basically there are two size tpyes 1-Din and 2-Din. If you need any additional help feel free to PM.

nope, there are lots of different sizes depending on what car you have, din and double din where the standard in the 90's now anything goes. again, depending on your car you'll also need a wiring convertor, as off the shelf stereos will be ISO, and your car may not be (if its newish and especially german then it won't be iso or din/double din) if its a ford then you may have to also buy a whole new center console (for example) etc etc without knowing what make, model and year your car is its impossible to say.

Also check ebay, you can get straight swap replacement stereos cheaply from there, just replaced the stereo in my focus (non standard size and wiring) for a no make chinese one, straight swap, no messing gps, android plays anything from anything for 300 quid.

Yes! this is true. In which case you can also look here: http://www.crutchfield.com/car/carse...r%2fmycar.aspx

Or you can try here: http://www.discount-car-hifi.ch/shop...ent.php?coID=0

Otherwise have you considered adding on a CD Changer unit?

I had to buy some connectors on ebay as well, CHF 10 or so, but this was for a '98 Fiat, modern cars probably don't need them.

Last week I ran across an SD Card based replacement for a CD changer. It had an ISO connector, and the head end just recognised the SD Card as a bunch of CDs. Literally plug and Play.
