New car stereo

The CD part of our car radio is no longer working (although the radio is fine)
so we would like to replace it. However we are not sure who to go to or if it
is easy enough to replace by ourselves.

We are obviously willing to pay but only want a basic CD player/ radio so don't
want to spend a fortune! The car is a VW Golf (mark 5)if that makes a
difference.

Can any suggest someone who could advise us on a stereo and help fit it?
English is best but we could get by in German if necessary. The Thalwil/ Horgen area would be best but Zurich is fine.

Thanks.

Re: New car stereo

Well, you have the following options if you don't want to go to Amag for an original replacement:

1. Either you go to a junkyard and ask for the same head-unit in serviceable condition;
2. Or you buy an unviersal head unit (for 200-300 Euros you can get one with lots of features: DVD, GPS, PiP, rear camera ready, etc.) and a facia adapter.
Careful though if you decide to go for the universal HU, you may also need an adapter for the connectors!!! Most of the HU come with these adapters, but you better make sure what kind of connector your car has (I'm 95% sure is an ISO connector) and if the HU comes with ISO connectors and/or adapters.
Talking about the work, it's not rocket science and on top of that youtube is full of tutorials.

Re: New car stereo

Thank you for the information.

Although you suggest it's easy enough to do we would still rather get someone who knows what they are doing so can anyone suggest the best place to go. Usual story, back home we would go to somewhere like Halfords so is there anywhere along those lines to take it to?
