| | | Taxi - geneva ? ( fare refusal )
hi all,
does anyone know the laws or rules governing taxis ?
mrs. g just arrived at Cornavin ( main train station GE ) and being late for an apptm. she wanted to get a taxi to Place Molard ... a fairly short fare.
she got in a taxi at the rank, told the driver her destination and he told her to get out and take a bus as he didn't want a short fare after sitting in the queue for an hour.

As a private company, I presume that they are entitled to refuse any fare they want.
Sucks for Mrs. G., but not much recourse I think.

As for Mrs G's conundrum. Don't know. I do know that in France, however, a taxi cannot refuse a fare no matter how short. But that doesn't help as much as my grammatical instruction... |

There's a cantonal law on taxis and limousines (http://www.geneve.ch/legislation/rsg/f/s/rsg_H1_30.html). Under Article 39 taxi drivers have to accept any fare, no matter where they pick you up or what your destination is. If the taxi driver does not fulfill his obligations under this law, he may be fined or have the taxi license revoked.

In Berne the taxis cannot refuse a fare, only if customer is very drunk etc.

Even self employed cabbies should be governed by regs.

This happened to my brother when we lived in Germany - he wanted to catch a taxi from the airport to my house and was refused for the same reason about short fare and waiting in line for the queue etc. I was surprised, not much you can do about it I guess!

I can tell you a story with a complete other twist: A 2.4 km Taxi ride from Rapperswil Trainstation to Hochschule Rapperswil which as Google Maps shows is the shortest distance. By Car. It is a mere 150 meters on foot!

Our Geneva office actually has standing guidance on this, as we're close to the airport. They're not allowed to refuse but often do - take the tag number and report him next time, it will land him in hot water.

Presumably this is what we would want them to do? I know I would - and I too would watch with glee. As a resident of Kloten not only have I been left standing on the pavement at 5 o'clock in the morning because the promised taxi had something better to do than to fetch me, but I also hear the tales of woe from those around who always have a battle to be taken home from the airport.

Indeed, Geneva taxis are obliged to accept all fares (I suspect within the canton at least).
Solutions:
1) Remain in the cab and don't move - you're depriving the cabby of a fare and he'll probably give up and take you.
2) Report to the police. They do take this seriously.
