The potential problem I see though is people who live across the border and work in Switzerland. They could easily try and cheat the system by getting a tourist one and then not renewing after two months, hoping they don't get caught. As it is now you have to pay the one fee regardless of how long you're here for so no point in trying to get away with it as much. That said, if they linked any infringement of that type to the loss of the work permit that would be a good deterrent.
How do you think they will cheat it, being swiss there will be a way of easily detecting when a vignette is expired and the border guys will be looking for expired versions to make sure they exteact the required extras.

The more likely approach is that people who are permanent regulars may not be classified as tourists but have an option to purchase a full year pass

Re: The Swiss Vignette to increase from CHF40 to CHF100 pa

I'm thinking of the smaller crossing areas like up at Vallorbe. There's a lot of cross border traffic there during rush hours especially so it might be easy to slip through. Yes, they might be picked up by cameras further along on their journey, but not necessarily at the border itself. Just a thought though.

Both border crossings at Vallorbe/Ballaigues and Les Verrieres (Pontarlier) check vignettes like hawks.

100/year comes to 8chf per month. Surely a price worth paying to drive on the amazing roads (and tunnels, and bridges) in this country.

it costs us much more than that for one trip to Calais to go to UK, or a trip to Rome!

Why would the border guards check for vignettes at Les Verrieres? It's miles away from the nearest Autoroute and there's nothing illegal about driving on non-federal highways (routes cantonales) without a vignette.

Re: The Swiss Vignette to increase from CHF40 to CHF100 pa

I think the 100chf Vignette is a fair price to pay for the good autobahns we have in this country.
My neighbour works as a cleaner on the autobahns and I must salute him for keeping them clean and free of ice and snow, day and night without fail.

I do take issue that the Vignette is not transferable for people with more than 1 vehicle. I think it is a more fair way to pay for road use but the logistics of making this happen is very complex and perhaps too much effort for the Swiss Traffic Authorities. It is like the transferable number-plates. The owner can only drive 1 vehicle at one time.

Another thing is the same price for Motorcycles. I don't really like that we have to buy the same Vignette at the same price (ok, I opened a can of worms I can tell).
I think perhaps a 50chf Vignette for the motorcycles could be a fairer price. Why? Most motorcycles are used only in spring and summer time.

They'll just stop any car without a vignette and ask where they are going and if they are going to be anywhere a Mway.

Is that legal?
I thought the sticker must be on a part which is part of bike and not removable?

Everything on a bike is removable except the frame. Screen is a few bolts, bmw rear wheel stone guard is same. List goes on.

It should be on display but majority put it under the seat.

I have not had any issues during roadside checks with under seat or with the holder.

Law does not say anything about visibility on a motorcycle. Not even a 'should'. It just has to be easily accessible. Art. 3 NSAV.

Wish you good luck with your holder and a lot of understanding and/or clueless policemen. Personally I would not risk the CHF 200 fine. Art. 14 NSAG.

Regarding new price: CHF 100 is ridiculous for Motorbikes. Totally over the top. I also strongly request a law which says the Vignette can be mounted on the license plate instead of screen / frame.

A friend of mine pasted the Vignette on the back of his number plate. It is easily removable when he is changing from one bike to the other.

Problem is: on some days, he forgets and rides without his number plate (and of course the Vignette).
It happened several times he confessed.
I wonder what that fine would be?

And no, I am still a monogamous bike owner. 1 only (still).

100chf for a motorcycle for 4-6 months is just....ahem....scandalous.

PS: I think a fair way is to carry the Vignette with you, with say upto 3 license plate numbers written on it.

Re: The Swiss Vignette to increase from CHF40 to CHF100 pa

Any change in the options for a short term vignette? I arrive today in a Spanish rental car and staying for about two weeks. IIRC, there is a 2 month vignette option for 40 CHF.

Looking forward to "getting Switzerlanded" again!

Cheers,

Fduvall

Re: The Swiss Vignette to increase from CHF40 to CHF100 pa

There are no short term optons as the vingette increase wasn't accepted. So you'll still pay CHF40. But it'll only be valid until the end of January if you get a 2013 one. If you can buy a 2014 vingettte (they are on sale so ask if you think you'll be back here in again in 2014) then it will be valid until end of January 2015.
