Speed cameras - tunnels? Red flash?

I was on the highway this weekend on a section with lots of tunnels. Was doing the speed limit in between each tunnel every time (120) then back to 100 then back to 120 again, etc.... The highway was practically empty.

Well, what do you know, I missed one... I went into one tunnel at around 120. A few moments later I saw a bright RED flash on the roof of the tunnel. So did I just get flashed and should start checking my mailbox soon for a ticket?

I'm thinking the flash should be white but what do I know...
I guess that's the downside to using the cruise control around here...

Where was the tunnel, we could check out the radar DB to see if there is a fixed radar there

Some flash red too - especially the ones used in low light conditions.

Re: Did I just get my picture taken?!?

aye, I got blinded by a red laser light this weekend in a tunnel as well. Coming back from Flumserberg there is a series of tunnels before Lachen. I got lashed going 120 through the tunnel.

It could only be a speed camera.

Re: Did I just get my picture taken?!?

I think after all the tunnel car crashes and fires that ended with casualties one should never speed through a tunnel. I am glad they put controls in there. I make it a rule to at least follow the speed limit when I am driving through all tunnels.

Thanks. It was on the A1 between Lausanne and Bern - the section along the lake Neuchatel. It would also be helpful if you can tell me the link to the radar DB.

Btw, I always drive within the speed limit but anyone can have a momentary lapse, right? I'm still not used to so many tunnels on the highways around here.

So what would the damage $$$ be if I was going 20 km over the limit?

20kph x 20CHF? Oooo... 400CHF, painful! My sympathies over the momentary lapse; it can happen to anyone.

There's definitely one red flashing box there, middle of the tunnel.

That's not quite how it works... Here is the official fines table. 303, 3d.

Is it really so much? I know they have really hefty fines in built up areas but I thought they didn't whack you so hard if it was speeding on a motorway.

Re: Did I just get my picture taken?!?

www.radar.ch is a good spot to check out where the cameras might be. Before the journey.

The A3 must be having a fundraiser for the Christmas party; you're mad to go anything over about 87 in those 80-tunnels

On the bright side, your speedo will over-read and they will give you 5% off. So 120 works out to be 100-105 or ~180 francs (my guess)

The red flash is an infrared flash IIRC...

Re: Speed cameras - tunnels? Red flash?

The other thing that it might be is part of the fire/ smoke detection system. You quite frequently see two boxes on the wall of the tunnel with a red light coming out of one, this is a laser setup that is measuring the smoke (or exhaust gas or visibility) conditions for the tunnel fans.

As far as I know the flashes on Swiss cameras are red, this is because they face towards you and it's to avoid blinding you with a white flash. Certainly this is the case for the ones I've seen and paid for

Re: Speed cameras - tunnels? Red flash?

I got my fine yesterday from Glarus (A3). 15 km to fast, -5 so I got a 60 CHF fine.

I was expecting worse.
