for the first time I have to look for winter tyres (225/45) and I wonder if it is cheaper to go across the border from Basel to find and mount them.
I have used the search function but there is not a clear info about this, so any help is appreciated!
if you are in basel and you drive right across the border into Germany, just past the big mall on the left and go straight, you will run into a tire place that is cheap and good... ok, you may not actually run into the place, but.. you will see

they even store the other tires for you (I guess like most places)

Re: where to buy winter tyres around Basel?

I was so silly I carried my winter tyres in the car from HU... It was to warm to mount it. Zoll wanted an invoice to prove that I bought them in Switzerland. Up to now I have not received any bill to pay but I am afraid it will arrive.
I just write this so that others do not make this error.

I've used these guys before - quick and efficient. http://www.adam-touring.ch/ (Allschwil).
I have also used Adam Touring in Allschwil and found them to be good.

I got mine from http://www.reifen-beierer.de/ in Schliengen

They will store your other set of wheels quite cheap too and give you the VAT back.
Avoid http://www.reifen-beierer.de/.

Not only I got ripped off for the car service paying a premium of about 40-50% for the fact that my plates were from ZH, but they also messed up big time e.g. not screwing things properly and breaking a few plastic pieces. After I wrote them a complaint and sending them pictures, they responded saying it wasn't them -- I'm just furious!

When it comes to the tax refund, it's illusive. You think you get a refund but in practice they charge you a higher price e.g. the after tax price is the same (or higher) as if you paid the price in a normal garage with taxes.

Just avoid these guys!

Re: where to buy winter tyres around Basel?

just ordered a set of goodyear ultragrip 8s for the OH car from reifendirekt.DE for delivery and fitting in Germany.

as a summary of prices around basel.

reifendirekt.de -euro price inc fitting/disposal €254 /304chf weil am rhein

reifen direct.ch inc cheapest fitting/disposal 320.64chf /€267 - pratteln in basel add another 40chf.

atu: €283 /350 chf inc fitting after claiming de tax and paying swiss tax

euromaster: €301/371chf inc fitting after paying de tax and paying swiss tax -

tyre set is over the limit for tax free so lets assume you get the de stamp and don't run away to try avoid the swiss tax or the de guy signals to the swiss customs so you have to pay.

Re: where to buy winter tyres around Basel?

I wrote to ReifenDirekt in Hannover Germany (Actually they are Delticom AG, Brühlstr. 11, 30169 Hannover, Deutschland reifendirekt.ch@delti.com )
and asked if they would refund the tax, and they replied no they do not.

I then went to a tyre specialist in Lörrach, ReifenTek, and got the same price, tyre fitted, as ReifenDirekt Switzerland was
offering. I also got the 19% tax back the same day.

What ever you do, make an appointment VERY soon! Both DE and CH are already booked up for weeks ahead!

Re: where to buy winter tyres around Basel?

pity the website is crap and no online prices...

but for anyone doing comparisons between Germany and Switzerland its important to figure in the extra cost of the swiss tax and not to only look at the mwst excl price.

tax free limit is 300. if I buy 2 tires for 100 each and my husband buys 2, I think we should fit in the limit. Am I not right?

They are not obligatory at all, but you may be held responsible in an accident for not having an appropriate tyre.

Re: where to buy winter tyres around Basel?

I had very good luck this summer (fast deliver and all 4 tires at the same time) from http://www.popgom.ch

They have a list of garages (with prices) for installing the tires near you.

The website is in DE and FR.
