Hello Everybody,

I am thinking about to buy my first car in Hungary ( because there is a bit cheaper) and want to use it here in Switzerland!

Just don`t know what kind of paperworks or other things I have to do with the brand new car ( number plate I should change and when? ) etc...

Please let me know everything I need to know about this process!

If you import a car to CH, from another country, which you have previously owned for less than 6mths. you will be liable to import duty. Other CH conformity criteria may also have to be met. Insurance could also be a problem.

Probably any money you save will have to be paid in duties and conforming to CH standards.

Much better and easier to buy a cheap Dacia Sandero or similar here.

You know ,some of the people said to me that I only need to change the number plate ( i d ont know how much does it cost) and also an MOT or some technical check up and then it s done.. is there a webpage, maybe in english language, which is all about this issues and it s official site?

It's usually cheaper to buy in Europe and import.

Would be better to buy a bike than a Dacia Sandero I think...

If it was that easy, we'd all be doing it and saving money.

You need an import declaration and then form 13.20A from the Zoll office
If it's under 6 months old you pay 8% (or something like that import tax)

You will need a certificate of conformity (about 30€ from the manufacturer or 150€ off the internet)
You need an Abgas test
If it's registered sice about June 2012 (not sure exactly) you need a CO2 test
You need to get Swiss insurance
You need to get an MFK test which you arrange at the police station

Then when you pass the MFK you can get Swiss plates

Will cost the price of the car plus:

8% import duty if you bought it less than 6 months ago.
CoC 30€
Abgas log book and test 60-120 CHF
Form 13.20A 20 CHF
CO2 test ?
MFK test 120 CHF

The new co2 tax usually makes it not worth it unless its low co2 emmissions

Julia, don't give up, I was also thinking the same thing (I'm also Hungarian ).

Buying the same car (I was thinking a Titanium Mondeo) in Hungary with a 27% VAT on it is about 15% cheaper (still), minus the 27% VAT after a successful import will be a major discount. That means we could buy brand new instead of second hand ~30-50k km.

All of my colleagues however, are advising that I'm better off buying Swiss with a good technique of bargaining, as the local MFK test officers are very picky for non-swiss cars, even if they are brand new - to be honest, if I can get similar level to our prices (about 15-20% off), I wouldn't take the hassle of importing.

Nowadays I am thinking to get a Swiss car (3-4 years old, dont want a brand new one) and then I dont nedd to pay taxes and everything and after an imported car, I dont need a husle, I am just gonna say ok I want to spend XX CHF for a car and just looking looking what I get for that money.... I have a hungarian car here, but the police always on my way and other man showed my his middle finger up when he saw my car on my way to work, so,, I thing that s a little agressive here............ anyway what s your opinion?

don't bother about the Swiss - they never learned to drive anyway. you must, however, change your plates within the 1st year of immigration, and you must change your driver's license as well, don't forget! You'd be better off selling the car at home.

If I have a B permit I have to change my hungarian driving licence for the swiss one in one year, but I think that s not the same with the L permit? ( I have an L one)

I believe it starts from your first entry date with your current L permit, not when you renew. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
