German Wings, low cost airline, expanding

Lufthansa has announced that it will expand German Wings, its low cost airline to all of Europe. No more going to Basel or Geneva for Ryan Air or Easy Jet! woo hoo!

You think that budget airlines don't fly to Zurich because they didn't realise it was there?

They don't fly to Zurich because the costs are too high - don't hold your breath it will be too different for German Wings

I know - sorry - I wasn't very clear. I mean that the true budget flights will be cheaper in other places that Zurich. I think that the budget airlines are doing a very good job of convincing people that they remain budget airlines when often regular airlines offer better deals now.

Its a bit like the low fat food which is still high in calories - the badge is very convincing

Anyone fly German Wings from ZH? I'm looking at flights to Dusseldorf and they are cheap, as low as 59 chufs each way. Just wondering if anyone has experience re delays etc.

Some additional competition will certainly not go amiss.

But I disagree that legacy carriers are *often* cheaper than budget airtlines. It happens sometimes, sure, but overall not really. I have a holiday home in Spain and try to go there once a month just to check up on things and book my Easyjet as far in advance as possible. I've only recently booked a handful of return flights for as a little 20CHF a leg. Just out of interest I tried the same with some legacy carriers and I could have payed about 10 times that for a flight involving 2 layovers and 24 hours plus of overall travelling time. Its almost as if the legacy carriers were trying to tell me to stay away.

Just an update, both flights left on time (left ZH Sat morning, returned late afternoon today), new looking aircraft, friendly staff (especially the Claudia Schiffer stewardess look alike on the way back ). Food/snacks you have to book with your ticket as I found out, but you can get a wine (or 2 ) on the plane itself. All in all a positive experience.

Re: German Wings, low cost airline, expanding

As i posted in Portuguese forum budget (low cost) airlines and legacy has different airlines models.

Low cost models are point to point flights. For example if you buy flight from Spain to France and France to Poland if the former get delayed the latter will not wait and no compensation.

So depends on what your needs are.
