SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

I have a business trip planned to the US but my OH and LO (4 months) want to come along.

The company pays for my flight in Business Class but getting the same class of ticket for my family would cost 6 times more than Economy, which I believe the money could be better spent on shopping or other stuff. So what would be the appropriate thing to do?

Is it also possible to swap seats once on the plane?

Get an Eco ticket for your wife and use miles to upgrade her to Business?

Re: SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

You mean can they sit in Business on your ticket and you take her Eco seat? Yes, you can.

Also, not sure if you are a member of the Swiss Miles and More programme, but a better way to upgrade than miles is often the "e-vouchers" which they seem to give at intervals, not often sure why. If you aren't a member, sign up now and maybe you'll get some - or if you are, check your account statement for "e-vouchers"

Do you buy the ticket and expense it or does your company purchase the ticket directly?

Re: SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

My company once agreed to pay the travel agent for a Business class ticket, and the travel agent gave me 2 Economy class tickets: the invoice stated just "airline tickets". That was in Munich in 1985, so I hope this works out for you.

The implication of the first and the facts of the second are both VERY risky in today's environment...and probably not even possible any more.

Ah - these answers are the very lifeblood of EF....."You may know what you want to do and are asking how to get it.....but I know better than you what you need"

OP - make sure you post back here when you are hungry for lunch and looking for suggestions - I'm sure somebody will tell you that there is a better plan than eating

Re: SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

Using miles to upgrade has become very difficult on some Swiss routes - ZRH-ORD being one of them. OH has gazillions of miles, but hasn't been able to use them to get an upgrade in the last year. Business class is often booked out on that route.

If you hope to use miles to upgrade, you might try to travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday; we've had better luck in the past when traveling those days.

I hear ya about the painful prices, though - business on that route is 6-7000. Heck, even economy flex is 3000.

We have to travel so often these days that we just can't pop for business anymore - but it's only 10 hours, so we lump it. As long as it's a direct flight, economy is fine.

If one only travels a few times a year it's nice to treat yourself to business class - but when traveling every few weeks on your own dime... as you said, that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Re: SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

I don't have enough miles on miles and more to upgrade them to business class and I do pay for the ticket myself and then get reimbursed.

I wouldn't do what Sbrinz suggested even if I can easily get away with it.

I don't recollect receiving e-vouchers although I'm a member of miles and more.

Re: SWISS Business Class or Economy advice needed

If you really want to fly all in Business you will save a lot of money if you start your journey outside of Switzerland. It's a little of a hassle depending on where you live but for example flying on Swiss in Business to Dubai from Lugano via Zurich was almost twice the fare compared to flying Swiss in Business and commencing the journey from Milan.

You obviously know better than the rest of us where in the US the OP is traveling to and if it's a direct flight or not. My trip there last month involved 15 hours of flying, not really short haul, is it? And yes, I do the much longer Oz trip on a regular basis, before you chime in with that.
Flying with a little one is so much more comfortable in business as well, for everyone.

15 hours wow so short, fly to aust and that is only one leg of 2, regularly did over that with a 6 month in cattle class and dead easy

By the way I have no idea where they are from, my post was only a windup which seems to have worked.

No it was not a fraud. READ it again FFS.

The US company in Munich agreed to effectively pay for my girl friend to fly to US, provided we travelled in coach class. Who defrauded whom?

Depending on who you are flying with the flight attendants can get in a bit of a snit if you swap places (the all-incusive "security reasons" are generally quoted). Some also dislike it if there is a to-ing and fro-ing in the business class cabin. If you ask the FA nicely and say that you would like to swap halfway through they may well look upon it benevolently!

From a compliance and who knows what else is quoted nowadays perspective, the only "correct" answer (other than swapping seats as mentioned above) would be to tell your company that you will fly in eco as your wife and child are flying with you. Not the most comfortable solution, I know, and if there was a "legal" workaround then that's great.

Companies are just becoming much stricter now on these kind of issues. The company I work for has a "zero tolerance" policy on possible stunts for situations like this and it just isn't worth trying.

Sorry I must have misread the part where the travel agent gave you a business class ticket. You know, the thing that your company agreed to pay for.

You know, my company once agreed to pay for me to go on a fork-truck driving course. I stayed at home, reading EF and eating Mars Bars - I didn't post much in those days. The invoice I printed just said "Doing stuff". It worked out well for me (until I hit some shelves in a warehouse where a man was sleeping, but there were rats there too, and he got Weil's disease but he was on his way for a job interview, but he ended up going out with the boss's daughter. Oh. Hang on, that was an episode of Casualty.)

Ah, so you mean that your company once agreed to pay the travel agent for two economy tickets, and the travel agent gave you two Economy class tickets.

Why didn't you say so? It would have saved me all this typing. And the sad thoughts about that poor actor with Weil's disease.

i doubt the company would have agreed to do this. for one thing, your business class ticket would have been tax deductible, whereas the ticket for your girlfriend not. so the tax man has been defrauded and by extention the entire population of the country where your company pays taxes. so, quite a lot of people were defrauded.

3 hours is a short hop

7 hours is a short flight

10-12 hours is medium

20 plus is long
