7 year old niece coming to visit

We don't have kids and usually pay very little attention to anything child related! However my sister in law and her seven year old daughter are coming to visit in a few weeks time and it occurred to me that I had no idea what the rules on car seats are.

A search on here seems to show that we need a car booster seat if she's under 150cms but all the threads are quite old so I thought I'd check. Anyone know for certain what the rules are?

Assuming we need a booster seat any ideas on the best place to find a cheep one? I'm guessing Jumbo or Obi sell them but I've never looked. Or is anyone in the Basel area getting rid of one we could pick up?

You need a full car seat which is for 4-5 years and above. They are adjustable and you can pick one up in Jumbo relatively cheaply.

I've also seen booster seats in Migros (the bigger ones). We use a booster for our daughter (7, nearly 8), but then we don't have a car, so only use it every now and then when we use a Mobility car.

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

Thanks for all the swift replies. I'm still not clear if I need just a booster seat or a full child seat? Surely she's too old for a child seat isn't she?

You can tell we don't 'do' kids can't you!

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

Full clarification: children under 12 or 150cm (whichever is attained first) require a booster seat.

Landi is another option for approx. 15chufs.

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

Cheapest and security-wise best option: get a used one form a good brand (e.g. Römer) on ebay, re-sell for the same price or just a little less. If you want a new one, cross the border to Germany (Baby Walz, ATU).

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

Depending on how much they're bringing with them, can't they bring their own booster seat?

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

The TCS website has a great deal of information on child seats.

You can download this brochure in many languages.

Re: 7 year old niece coming to visit

If you buy a second hand seat ensure it is less than 5 years old, car seats only have a 5 year life span.
