Yes you can start and finish anywhere, if the date is not printed on the tickets you need to put them into the orange validator machine on the travel day, to print the date onto the ticket.

For what it's worth, Pikaxu, I can vouch for Sbrinz. If tickets are available in his gemeinde and you send him cash, you can count on him to come through with tickets for you.

Your answer is here:

train tickets from Germany

Yes, it will not be a problem as there is no Zugbindung in CH with DB international tickets. From Zürich, you can show your DB ticket and ID to the SBB ticket inspector for the remainder of the non-Zugbindung journey to Geneva within 30 days from the start of the validity date mentioned on the ticket ( TCV rules ).

Zugbindung only occurs to / from Germany using IC ( InterCity ) and above class of products.

Ticket binding on a specific train, specific date and time, no variations allowed. If the ticket says that the train crossing the border is called eg ICE 9, you cannot board an alternate train later nor earlier.

Zugbindung

Re: Cheapest way Zurich to Geneve?Anyone can give a ride?Cheapest place to stay 1nigh

I´m going to buy by internet a specific ticket from Munich to Geneve, the train it´s in a specific hour and it´s necessary make some changes my intention it´s to catch the train in Schaffausen or Zurich

http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/en?ld=9698&seqnr=1&ident=j3.03029198.1360089948&rt =1&rememberSortType=minDeparture&HWAI=JS!ajax=yes! &HWAI=CONNECTION$C0-0!id=C0-0!HwaiConId=C0-0!HwaiDetailStatus=details!;~CONNECTION$C0-0!HwaiMapStatus=UNDEFINED!HwaiMapNumber=UNDEFINED! HwaiMapSlider=UNDEFINED!HwaiDetailHimMessage=UNDEF INED!;

So I think this is a Zugbindung ?It´s a problem that I dont catch the train in Munich?

Re: Cheapest way Zurich to Geneve?Anyone can give a ride?Cheapest place to stay 1nigh

Best to attach a screenshot ( I just did ). Zugbindung is on the Euro City that crosses from München to St. Gallen / Winterthur / Zürich HB. After that, it is no longer Zugbindung i.e. you can take any ICN, IC from SBB to Geneva.

Your Zugbindung is on the ICE 690 only.

You can miss the IC 1524 ( if you wish to ) and take an equivalent train from Zürich HB to Geneva on any date and time once up to 30 days from the date of the ticket.

train tickets from Germany has info that is has been done 100s of times

Re: Cheapest way Zurich to Geneve?Anyone can give a ride?Cheapest place to stay 1nigh

the ticket I choose you are saying that I only need to catch until Zurich the specific train from the ticket, and from zurich to geneve I can go in any train of SBB?

I don´t mind on going in the specific train mentioned in the ticket,if necessary,my doubt it´s if the ticket supervisor it´s going to notice that I didn´t catch the first 2 trains from the ticket, that I didn´t came from germany...

Re: Cheapest way Zurich to Geneve?Anyone can give a ride?Cheapest place to stay 1nigh

I have one for tomorrow and I have missed Zugbindung ( today ) on purpose and taking the best train to Geneva from Zürich.

The InterCity IC 183 is Zugbindung. The InterCity IC 710 is not, hence free to take any equivalent train up to 30 days from 05.02.2013.

<1080Y means Deutsche Bahn trains ( Zugbindung ) and <1185> means SBB trains ( non Zugbindung ).

And again I had no issues with the SBB ticket inspector despite having a clean unvalidated print online e-ticket issued by DB ( in the penultimate post ). Arrived in Geneva Airport.

An other possibility which offers more flexibility is a car. For example Sixt.ch offers free one-way within Switerland. A cheap one day rental is approx CHF 100 (cheaper if not from an airport). Fuel not included.

Re: Cheapest way Zurich to Geneve?Anyone can give a ride?Cheapest place to stay 1nigh

Just found out something today by trial and error.

Supersaver ticket from Zürich HB to Geneva Airport...not available.
Supersaver ticket from Zürich HB to Geneva...that's fine.

So I paid around 28 rather than 45 (all with Halb-tax) and will probably need to pay a few more franks for the Geneva to Geneva Airport bit but saved 15 franks.. per person...per train.

Hope this helps someone else!

Accommodation in Geneva is not cheap, but have a look at the geneva tourism office http://www.geneve-tourisme.ch/en/accommodation/
Also somewhat cheaper is looking over the border in Annemasse or Ferney-Voltaire (the latter is close to the airport). However, be aware, public transportation on the French side is pretty dire and all official accommodation in Geneva (but not in France or Vaud) will give you a public transport pass, valid for the whole of your stay.
