What's with women and SUV?

Seriously, why?
First I want to say I am not an expert in cars, so I might be wrong in some statements, feel free to bash I don't wanna compare say BMW X5 to Peugeot 108, but let's say to BMW 535 xd touring (feel free to change it for any other comparable brand). So:

- generally touring has more trunk space, since it's longer (also leg space in back seats might be better)
- much better handling abilities, also because centre of gravity is much lower (safety, anyone?)
- not sure about purchasing price of something comparable (too lazy to dig) but maintenance is cheaper with regular car
- more eco-friendly (less material used for construction, less fuel consumption) - this point is especially ridiculous for those bio-eco-obsessed ladies (nothing wrong with that, but let's be consistent for a while)
- fugly as hell, with rare exceptions
- parking issues, especially in this country
- etc... (feel free to add)

Generally on web there is logical agreement that SUV give impression of much more safety over regular cars (again, depends which one!) but reality is quite different, and in some cases (rolling, one-car accidents) SUVs are actually much less safe.

Advertising industry focuses strongly with SUVs on women, since this bias is widely known. I personally don't know a single man who would prefer SUV for a family car. If they buy it, it's because of their GF/wives.

Interesting quotation from one research on this topic:
When a driver feels unsafe when driving a vehicle, it makes the vehicle safer. When a driver feels safe when driving, the vehicle becomes less safe.

Parking issues with SUV, I'd guess? You'll have more parking issues with a longer car as opposed to a higher one.

Yes and no - parking issues is more to do with visibility and angles. A high curved vehicle (X5) will be a lot harder to park than a long square one (Volvo 740!).

IMHO very few people actually NEED an SUV over a similarly specced estate/touring/sportcombi - and that does include 4wd.

SUVs work if:
- you desperately need a 7-seater but the thought of driving a Renault Scenic brings you out in hives
- you need to tow something over 2000kg (Mercedes E-class with tow 2,100kg and the VW Passat R36 2,200kg - but most peak at 2,000kg)
- you really want to go "off-road"

Why do lots of women prefer pumps over flat shoes?
This is about the same comparison, except for the parking problem.

I agree with most of your logic, which is why I drive a Passat R36, but at the time I bought it (2008) there really wasn't much choice outside the SUV types. I note that since then a few more 4wd estate cars (Station Wagon, Break, Combi, whatever), but still there's a lot more SUVs than normal cars with 4wd.

Presumably this is what the manufacturers think the public wants, but I don't know why.

I would say, though, that the trend as far as I can tell is no more or less noticeable for women than for men.

Maybe in eyes of other women, but for men definitely not. There are cars for that of this is your cup of tea, but many attributes including shape are very, very different.

“We buy things we don't need to impress people we don't like.” (left out the money part )

I agree with 7-seater point, but most SUV I see are not this category. For real offroad, many SUV are not offroad-enough

A good choice of car BTW

HOWEVER

Little choice in 2008 for a "mid-size" estate with 4wd? Hmmmm

If used only by wives/gfs, bought by their cash, who cares. But that's certainly not true for people around me, and many don't have cash / are environment conscious enough to not own more than 1 vehicle.

Who cares about shoes, ladies are the only one who will walk in those (if not problem lies elsewhere!). So not entirely comparable

Actually the Beemers weren't yet available in 4WD, and the Audi A4 was at the end of the run from the previous shape. Several of the others have never, AFAIAA, been made in 4WD, like the Mercs and any decent-sized Alfa and Saab.

Anyway, the other criteria I was applying included:

Size - big
Comfort - ruled out the Scooby,
Power - rules out a lot of them, given that 250PS was around the minimum,
Not a slush-box. The A6 at that time was available in manual, so not too bad, but had not yet been upgraded to the DSG. Many of the others were not available in manual with the bigger engines.
Driveability.

So yes, you're right, the choice wasn't quite as limited as I made out, but until I found the 3.2 and 3.6 Passats I was unable to satisfy all those criteria. Hence it was really a class of 1.

SUVs have tiny boots relative to the size of the car.

Most cars nowadays come with parking sensors and/or camera, so visibility not such an issue. The actual space needed for a longer car might be.

I would still say the choice of a 4x4 estate (not suv) is VERY LIMITED
Now I belive it is only

Subaru - ugly interior
VW-AUDI-SKODA
BMW
Merc.
Opel - sorry but still an opel - and anyway one can not see anything out of the insignia
Volvo - I am not old enough

so thats about it. Not too much choice if you ask me. I wish the french made some 4x4 estates. I really like the C5/ 507/ Laguna trio, but w/o 4x4 they are out of the equation for me.
