Hey EF!

Perhaps someone can help me out.
While i understand perfectly well how to count Zone Upgrades, I am having a hard time understanding where this Zone Upgrade starts from.

For example, I currently have the yearly Zone 110 abo, and, let's say for a specific strip I also have to buy a ticket from Pfaffikon ZS to Lachen (regular ticket). If I have a 4 Zone Upgrade for that day anyway, can I use this Zone Upgrade from Zone 110 and onward AS WELL AS from Pfaffikon to +4 zones from there (since I have a regular ticket from Pfaffikon to Lachen anyway)? Or, is this zone upgrade only valid from Zone 110?

If any experts have any insight into that, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
You'll need a 5 zone extension to get you from 110 to Pfaffikon - 150,151,152,153,181

You can then use your Pfaffikon to Lachen ticket

Re: Zurich zone extension ticket confusion

Thanks for your reply.

If I understand correctly I need a 4 zone upgrade because my ticket from Pfaffikon to Lachen already includes the Pfaffikon Zone, thus I don't need to get it again through the Zone Upgrade.

But, my question isn't about how many zones I need, it's about where I can use the Zone upgrades. Can these extra 4 Zone Upgrades also be used to travel from Pfaffikon to let's say Wetzikon, or another 4 zones in another direction within Kanton of Zurich, OR are they only eligible to be used from Zone 110 as zone upgrades? Basically, if I have a ticket for, let's say, Pfaffikon anyway, can that count as my "home zone" where the zone upgrades can start to count from?

You need a 5 zone extension - your 4 zone extension will take you to Richterswil - where you can get off the train and walk to Bach - get on the train and use the Pfaffikon(zone) - Lachen ticket. You'd then have to do the same in reverse.

The only way you'd be able to use a 4-zone extension is if Richterswil sat on the border of 153 and 181.

The zone extension is added to your existing ticket - so if you have a 110 ticket and a 5 zone extension you could get to Pfaffikon SZ. You could also do Zone 110 to Feldbach (133). You couldn't do Pfaffikon SZ to Feldbach direct - you'd have to go via Zone 110.

Re: Zurich zone extension ticket confusion

Assuming you have a Zone 110 a Zone 181+997 and a 4 Zone ZVV extension Ticket.
The extension ticket is neither coupled to a specific base ticket nor specific zones.

Then you can travel from Zurich to Pfäffikon SZ if the train stops at least once in between, which is as far as I know always the case.
(I think ZVV rules may even allow it w/o a stop. But to be save have a stop where you can "switch" the base ticket of the extension).

From Zurich zou can use the extension Ticket all the way to Winterthur or Dietikon. From Pfäffikon you can then go to Bauma or Wetzikon.
You can not use the ZVV extension to go to Ziegelbrücke or Wettingen as they are part of Ostwind and A-Welle system respectively..

Re: Zurich zone extension ticket confusion

PS: A 24h 4 Zone extension plus a 24h Zone 110 cost exactly the same as a 24h 7 Zone extension. The later allows the use of all ZVV zones.

Re: Zurich zone extension ticket confusion

Hi guys!
Thanks for your help and your answers.

I stopped by the SBB office today to clarify this, and here is some info, in case this will help someone else (and the SBB employee triple confirmed this for me):

1. In my case, since my "home base" ticket is Zone 110, then the zone upgrades work only from that zone (obviously, in any direction). Even though I have a ticket that I will purchase from Pfaffikon to Lachen, the zone upgrade still only applies from Zurich to any four zones.

2. Regarding whether Pfaffikon is 4 or 5 zones:
If I were to go just to Pfaffikon from Zurich (with my Zurich abo), then yes, I would have to get a 5 Zone upgrade. However, because I will then be buying a ticket from Pfaffikon to Lachen, I only need a 4 zone upgrade because that ticket from Pfaffikon to Lachen covers ALL of zone 181.

So, if your FINAL destination is whatever zone, then your upgrade has to cover that zone. But, if you keep going from this destination and have a ticket onward, then you do not need to cover that zone in an upgrade, as it will be covered in the ticket you purchase to go from that zone onward.

Same applies in the case of Zone Upgrades. For example, when I go to Lachen, my ticket is not Zurich Lachen (because I already have a monthly Abo in Zone 110), instead it is from Thalwil to Lachen.

Just keep that in mind when purchasing upgrades and tickets in general

Just in case this helps someone in the future.
