Bringing a bike into Switzerland... do I need to be aware of something?

Do i need to declare the chassis number somewhere?
Is insurance mandatory?
I will carry it on top of my car, could I have problems on the border crossing?
Is there any law to be aware of, about bikes there?

Thanks.

My friend brought a bicycle inside the car (in parts) without any problems. I send mine via cargo - also no problems (just the question at the pick-up - whether it was new or not - probably if it was brand new - then some customs stuff).

You need to buy a vignette sticker which includes insurance cover. You can get them from supermarkets, bicycle shops and I think the Post Office (not sure about this). The vignette is cheap - under 10frs and you have to stick it on the bike or tthe police will fine you if they catch you. it lasts a year.

I cross the border all the time with bikes in the car. Just take off any tags that make it look new and drive through. It would help if you have a bag of dirty cycling clothes in the car too!!!

As for the insurance you need a velo vignette. They can be got from places like Denner or the post office, they are pretty cheap and last until may of the year after purchase. i.e. If you buy one now it is valid until May 2009.
