Conversion of Indian Drivers License

Dear All,

I am living in Switzerland since Nov 2013 and would like to get the Switzerland driving license.

I heard from people that you have to get your foreign driving license converted to Swiss with one year from your arrival date.

Can some one please confirm?

Thanks
Sanjay

Here's a link that has more info. As far as I know, you will have to complete both the theory and driving tests, as India is not one of the countries on the approved list for straight-over conversion.

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

I converted my indian driving license into swiss driving license by giving practical test only (with 5 lessons and some practice)(within 1 year of arrival in swiss).
I did this 7 years ago so don't know if they have changed any rules
good luck

I took the test in 2010. No direct conversion. You need to go for the tests. Make sure you get some lessons ahead of taking the test. They strongly believe that drivers from India need to learn how to drive on the wrong side of the road....

Haha... Do they not know that you're ambidextrous when it comes to driving sides??

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

It's not very difficult to convert.
1. within 1 year u can drive without converting license
2. take some initial lesson. Instructor will give u some idea
3. go to local mfk and apply for conversion
4. Within 2-4 weeks, u have to give a practical test consisting of city driving and highway driving

if u pass u get a swiss license else u loose ur indian license... but it's easy to get replacement in india

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

I got mine converted two years ago. A few quick tips:

* you can 'request' (very politely) for a few months extension to the one year period. I got one for 4 months.
* take a few lessons from a driving instructor
*reverse parking; don't forget to leave the wheels in the correct direction + hand brake.
*showing extra care at pedestrian crossings, or with kids playing on the foot path - does not necessarily mean slowing down, foot hovering over brake is enough
* 'learn' the local roudabouts-esp the tricky double ones
* eyes constantly scanning - situational awareness - esp few cars in front.
* signalling correctly at roundabouts - esp when exiting
* drive as near as possible to the prescribed speed - not too slow.
above all
ample display of calm confidence in the city, and at motorway exits

HTH- best of luck!!

PS I haven't heard the one about the Indian licence being cancelled. In fact the just paste a sticker on it saying "NOT VALID IN CH" - even if you pass.

What do you mean 'punched' ? I just got a sticker 'pasted' on mime. Also, I really wonder if one country can actually cancel a driving licence issued by another country. would really appreciate some extra info this...

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

First and foremost, the invalid sticker / stamp is basically that this license in not valid to drive in Switzerland any more. Still valid in India

Yes, this was also explained to me by the authorities in Basel, if you have a foreign drivers license (not sure if all countries included though) and have been in CH for less than a year, you need to take the practical test. Not sure if the extra courses have to be followed though

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

Thanks to all for the Information.

As per the law the licence needs to converted within first year of arrival but the lady in the office said they accept it till 5 years.

I have submitted my all the documents to them including the translated document of my licence from hindi to english. They said they will verify the licence and once its done they will issue a new one for 3 months.

@SVA/ALL,

Can you guys recommend a good learning school in Klein Basel.

Thanks

I didn't have to take the practical test in Zürich, but would have needed to do that after 1 year. I understood that when having a foreign driving license you need to do the conversion within a year, otherwise you need to take the tests (not sure if all of them).

LE: Sorry, you are right, there could be differences between countries of origin...

Re: Conversion of Indian Drivers License

I would like to share my experience about conversion of Indian driving license.

This post is to record some specific points and tips to pass the swiss driving test.

Steps:
  1. Get the form for driving license from strassenverkehrsamt or print at home
  2. Get it done the Eye test - I have done in shil city- 10 chf
  3. Submit the form at either strassenverkehrsamt or at local gemeide with the indian driving license ( I have submitted my duplicate driving license as I missed my original license (color xerox) ( I have submitted in Oerlikon) )
  4. You will receive a letter about the day of preference and office you are planning to appear for test. ( I have done in regendorf) It is better to do in Regensdorf or Bulach as the surrounding traffic will be less and no tram lines. It is better to choose monday to wednesday for driving exam.
  5. Send back the form
  6. You will receive a letter mentioning date and time for the exam and the parking bay allocated for your start of exam.
  7. Appear for the exam
  8. if you passed the exam you will receive swiss license and indian license with a sticker that not valid in switzerland
  9. if you fail then they will give your indian license with a sticker that not valid in switzerland

Tips for passing the exam.
  • Always maintain speed limit
  • Check speed limit
  • look for road signal panel
  • Check for Dead end and no right turn
  • Check for continuous lines or dotted lines and drive accordingly
  • indicate before start to move/drive
  • when crossing the bus when it is in bus stop look in front of bus and slow down little
  • slow well and change gear before the round about so that so can have enough time to see the vehicle coming from left and to move on.
  • maintain 5 meter distance from pedestrian line.
