Buying a car after lease ends

My lease ends next month and I will return to the US shortly thereafter. I have two options 1) give the car back and walk into the sunset 2) buy the car and resell it.

My question is, how much of a hassle (if at all) is it to resell a car in Switzerland? I am asking specifically with regards to the required shuffling or paperwork, visits to the Strassenvekehrsamt etc.
I am not looking to make money, but resell without any markup for a fellow expat as a parting gesture of good will before I leave Switzerland (really).

If it's a pain in the arse from an admin perspective, I will take option 1).

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

What's the car, spec, etc?
What's the buyout price?

And you do know that you have to pay off the lease which gets you a letter which allows the title to be transferred.

Add that to the thread and you'll soon see what people think.

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

Buying a leased car and selling it later is a good option. However, paperwork is not that easy. I did the same 3 years ago, but it was complicated...If you have time then go for it else simply give away the car back to leasing company

Thanks for the recommendation. Adding some more detail to the thread below.

BMW X5 3.0d
Year 2006
Mileage: 130K
Color is black with tinted windows.
Black leather seats (heated)
Panoramic sunroof
Tires seven months old
Buyout price is 15K plus VAT
I'd throw in a Tom Tom GPS (car also comes with built in GPS)

I had 4K of work done on the car last year (that hurt, bad). It's in great running condition.

I looked on Autoscout and similar specs/condition starting at 19.5K through to mid 20's

Once you have that letter (ASA Form 178 or confirmation that hold was removed electronically) a transfer to a new owner is easy.

What a load of rubbish, it's easy as anything, pay off the lease the lease co. Send you a letter, sell the car.

Give the car back, you will likely loose money on buying & reselling .

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

Do you really have the time to sell it? Autoscout prices are asking prices, would you offer a warranty?
What do you do if nobody is interested at 20'000 , probably sell it for 15'000 !

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

Give it back!!

A listed AS price of around 25k - will mean a garage purchased price of 15k.

Let the lease company take the hit!! I did

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

The office I work for is in a similar situation.

The car is a 8.2011 Peugeot 807 2.0 Diesel with full options on CD plates.
It has 68k kms in it and is in very good condition.

The leasing company is asking for 12.8k as a buy out option and the garage is asking for 6.8k for repairs if we want to give it back. Would buying and selling be better? We're thinking of buying it and then selling it even at a lower price just to lessen what we have to pay for. Any thoughts?

Where are you in the lease?

There are 2 ways to end a lease: pay out the remaining finance and own the car OR return the car and pay any costs to return the car in "excellent" condition (not perfect!!).

The buy out value is always the sum of the final payment plus any outstanding payments - it is fixed contract, no interest rebate.

The hand back option is where you pay the sum of the interest over the length of the contract + any depreciation (as per their model) to date.

In the latter, because they are often left with a car that is worth less than the market value they will pick up every scratch and fault and charge you for it. In your situation - if you buy out the car (12,800chf) and then sell it for more than 6,000chf then the car has cost less than 6,800chf to dispose.

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

We are ending the lease so these options are on the table. Is there any way to negotiate their quote? They are trying to charge us and replace fuel pump, seal, new tires, etc. We would just like to return the car and bring down the price as much as possible.

You might want to break out that 6,800chf.

Tyres? If they are "legal" then they can't kick up a fuss - although they may. Read your contract and the condition it should be returned in. Had the fuel pump failed? What seal needs replacing?

Re: Buying a car after lease ends

As far as I remember:

2.3k goes to paint and minor dent repairs on the doors.
300 for repainting the rims.
350 for tires
200+ for balancing
2k+ for fuel pump HDI ES
200+ I think for the pump seal
200+ repainting the seat plastics
plus other charges and VAT

I have been driving the car for a year and it hasn't failed on me. No fuel pump failure or anything major. That's why I was wondering why they're charging so much when in fact the car is very well taken care of. Garaged, maintained by them, low mileage, etc.

300 for repainting the rims. Did you scratch the wheels?

200+ for balancing
2k+ for fuel pump HDI ES Has it actually failed? Is it due at a specific service interval for this car??

200+ repainting the seat plastics Did you badly scratch them?
