Re: Speed Camera Types (and Motorbikes)

I can go you better. Buy even a cheap in-car GPS unit and make sure it is displaying your speed...more accurate than most in-car speedos if you are keeping a constant pace.

You can calibrate your speedometer on the motorway, if you have cruise control in your car. Drive at constant speed and stopwatch time between km posts.

Better have someone help you so that you are not distracted.

I don't believe this does get the rear. If you were doing silly speeds, though, they could track you down. If you're only 10 over, they might not bother.
And if you're really taking the mick they might go to considerable lengths to get you.

(OK, this is in the UK where they love the cameras nearly as much as ZH)

Tups, I'm confused - what does it matter? Do groans cause physical or mental distress?

ps. not that it matters, but my first posting wasn't groan worthy either...

LOL - ElJefe - I was merely asking a question. You coulda replied "I just wanted to" with a wink or smiley.
And true - Groans are merely disagreements with someones post. They are a "virtual disagreement" It doesnt' matter at all. I was just curious.
Funny stuff!
"but he groaned at me first!!"

Do speedcams work bi-directional?

Hello,
I received a fine for being 6km/h more than the speed limit after reducing the tolerance. I was surprised and went back to the place to figure out where exactly the camera was, as it was not very far away. I did find a camera but it was on the other side of the road. The camera faces the traffic coming from opposite side (the way I was coming from) but I always thought such cameras are for speeding vehicles coming from other side and flashed from back. It's a country side road with one lane each side.
1. Do you think these cams control also the vehicles coming from the opposite side?
2. Can I ask for a photograph, if yes, do I need to pay anything?
Thanks for your answers...

Re: Do speedcams work bi-directional?

Yes. Speed-cams flash cars from the front and from the back.

I have never asked for a photograph because I knew I was guilty. They almost certainly charge for the photo. And, if you delay fine payment, then it becomes a more expensive procedure.

Re: Do speedcams work bi-directional?

Thanks for your fast reply..how much is the charge for the photo.. any idea?
Is it possible that the camera is activated by a car passing away from its side (where the camera is located) and I got caught because I was on the other side of road at that time?

My husband did not believe it was him driving his car so he asked for a photo he just went to the police station , and they showed him the photo, and was not charged.

First, if you contest the fine, it will have to go through a court. That means you won't only pay for the photo but also the associated court fees.

Second, the camera software is able to tell which is the offending car regardless of direction of travel and number of cars (see the multiple highway lanes example).

So if you have time and money to waste, by all means, go for it.

That was kind of the police. In Zurich they say the photo is evidence and you have to go to court if you want to see it. It looks like this is the rule and not the exception, if you trust Shorrick Mk2.

I think a court case of this kind will set you back a couple 100 francs.

No. If you're curious abuet the tech specs of the cameras, have a look at this thread.

Some do, some don't.
The one in Hedingen for example it only works in one direction, I know this because a car over took me at a very high rate of speed right in front of it and nothing happened. The new one on the edge of town near Triemli works both ways, have seen it flash on cars in front of me while heading out of town despite it being on the inbound traffic side.
