As for driving under the limit, that's just an invite for people to tailgate to try and make you go faster. Hardly a safer option!
That's my main concern. I'm happy to stick to the speed limits (I drive a Chevvy Trailblazer SUV so she's more a cruiser then a speedster) but do that and you get a long line forming behind you, especially on the country roads. Just know that when my ticket arrives it'll be because I've been 'pushed' to go that little bit faster.

Also the lack of others indicating on a roundabout has caught me out a few times. In fact a colleague was stopped by the fuzz for indicating left when going around a roundabout, they said to only indicate when exiting. This a road rule here?

I was under the impression that the indicating rules were pretty much universal. Indicate going in, and indicate when leaving. Litespeed being former highway patrol can probably tell us the exact details?

Re: Who has a radar detector?

if this indicator-roundabout rule is so, it makes for practically ONE car on a roundabout at once because.....you have to guess if someone's staying or going.

If it's the law here then I suggest they change it

It's really very simple Lob. If a car is in the roundabout and not indicating, they are still going around. If they indicate after an exit, they will be getting off at the next exit. Therefore a car waiting at the exit after that sees their intention to exit on the previous exit and can then enter the roundabout, instead of waiting to see where they actually go.

In reality, the Swiss aren't particulaly good with roundabout discipline anyway, so I never trust their indicators. Most don't seem indicate at all in roundabouts. I guess it is because they all spent a small fortune on driving lessons...

Re: Who has a radar detector?

simple - yes. In reality? They don't indicate when leaving (especially when going what is effectively straight ahead) and we all know MIRROR SIGNAL MANOEUVRE is actually MANOEUVRESIGNAL

Re: Who has a radar detector?

Hey lobrockster, if you are in March watch out for the new grey vw transporter van parked around that part of Schwyz. My "radar detector" got picked up by it in Lachen the other day, parked in a private driveway. I know its been seen in Pfäffikon too.

so it's been confiscated?
I only really speed on the highway and the [temporary, sometimes there] cameras at the roadworks at Wollerau are something I'm familiar with....

how's that for you with border traffic and the occasional copper on the road? Is it dash-mounted or do you have a sensor mounted externally to the car?

Re: Who has a radar detector?

We are talking at x-purposes. I dont have a detector. I was calling my car itself a "radar detector" because since getting it I've accidentally picked up several fines! D

Trying to bait me.. your right I can trim you a wicked "mullett" haircut if you like ;-)

Getting off topic, but since the ratio of rainy/snow days to trackdays is like 200:1, especially at the moment, I prefer the monumental acceleration in the wet to the tail sliding possibilities, especially since the latter on public roads requires insane driving so stuck to the road is this car.

Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

I received a fine the other day for driving my "scooter" too fast...I was going 63kph where the limit was 50kph. The irony is that I honestly believed that the limit was 60 which it was on the same road just before the speed camera.

Just to let you know, the speeding fine said that they gave me 5kph leeway so I was going 63-5=58, 58-50= 8kph over the limit, which resulted into a CHF 120fine. The other thing is that I am sure I did not go over 60.

I mean come on.........It's only a scooter. I bought it for economy, not to pay fines.

For your info the camera I got caught on was on Wallissellenstrasse going towards the airport.

Re: How do speeding fines work in Switzerland?

Join the club Nick... Just count yourself lucky that you didn't get one of the new cameras where you only get 3kph off - your fine would have been 250. I know it sucks, but ALL vehicles on the road have to obey the road rules. I mean I wish I could run red lights like the cyclists, but they never get caught

Re: Who has a radar detector?

Thanks Mark. I didn't know they had old and new cameras on the roads and that the new ones only give you 3kph leeway. I suppose the new ones are the ones on the posts (not the box ones on the floor on the pavement) and have 2 lenses, one looking the way you are coming from and the other looking at the way you are going.

uuuuhhhhh. Those cyclists.......Don't remind me of them.

In fact somebody told me that she went to town one night last year and went on her pushbike as she was going to get drunk and as such left her car at home. And guess what? She rode it home while drunk and the police stopped her and "warned" her that she was not allowed to drive the pushbike while drunk and that she would normally get a fine but they let her off with a warning.

It's a bit crazy I think...

Re: Who has a radar detector?

Mine was confiscated earlier this year by the Customs office at Schaffhausen. Cost me 400chf as a "admin charge" but luckily no other "penalty" since I am a foreigner.

My model was a good one, could detect all highway "hidden" cars with radar, but hopeless for red-light cameras or mobile standing ones, cos they are very weak strength radar.

Best one is Valentine One, but most costly.
Whistler is another good brand.
Mine was an Escort 8500. Very good.

However be careful about the police, they confiscate and fine you.
In CH, really no need to use one.

Mine was "sitting" in glove compartment when I was "caught", I was not using it for more than 1 year....funny.

So it was powered off? Then how did they find it. Was it just a random search for something else?

Yes it was powered off.
They said it is different fine (higher i suppose), if I was caught USING it.

They had a routine check with my car at the customs, but I think they saw the windshield bracket, so they suspected something.
I was in Konstance for a day-shopping trip.

Shit happens.
