Tom,

It's one of those laws that you can get away with breaking. I would not obey this law but I would behave reasonably and not sit for too long without moving.

Heated windscreen is absolutely necessary though

Tom
Sure, if you don't mind paying the fine. When I first came to CH I let my car run to go and take some cash from the ATM. The police "stopped" me, and had me sit there for 30 minutes to let me know I was getting off with a warning. This happened on another occasion and since I just it off for everything.

I think there's a bit of a difference if you wander off to the ATM or you're working around your car scraping

I was standing 3 meters from the car in the cold. It's not a grey area issue. The motor has to be turned off. You do what you want.

Re: Your car and SNOW - police warning.

you should follow these recommendations also because if you have an accident and police is involved they will write EVERYTHING down and insurance will have your behind, with sand, and your driving license might fly too, even if it's not your fault.

Nope, 60 CHF fine due- even if you are scrapping the car!

326.1.
Faire chauffer inutilement le moteur d'un véhicule à l'arrêt (art. 33, let. a, OCR)
60 CHF

Happened to a friend of mine last winter. Police was tipped off by complaint from neighbour, as she did this every morning below their child's bedroom (and no, neighbours are not Swiss either ) - reason pollution + noise.

She was told she could let the engine run for 1 min or two AFTER she has cleared all the car and when she is back in the car... but not before whilst clearing said car.

Meanwhile in the UK, car thefts of cars left running to defrost windscreen and warm the car have become so common- that people have been warned not to do it- if you are busy scrapping the car it takes a few seconds for opportunity thieves to be dropped by your driver door and go. Insurances are now refusing to pay if that happens, as car is left unlocked, with key in AND running! Gangs have been driving around identifying owners with expensive cars doing this- and many have been caught out- and insurance refused to pay ! Paul Scholes, Manchester United football player found out last year !!!

Re: Your car and SNOW - police warning.

Isn't it really bad for the car, though, if you begin driving it in freezing temps. with it warming up a bit first?

Leaving a vehicle 'unattended' while the engine is running is an offence.
Does a blow-up doll sitting in the front seat qualify the car as being ... "attended?"

So what does "inutilement" mean in this case?. I'm not crazy to burn fuel for nothing, and heating the car so it can be driven properly is not "inutilement" IMHO....

Re: Your car and SNOW - police warning.

If the Swiss were really so worried about pollution, then perhaps they should be giving Flatulex to all these cows they have running about.

"In a 2006 United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization report, it claims that the livestock sector, most of which are cows, "generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport." According to a Danish study, the average cow produces enough methane per year to do the same greenhouse damage as four tons of carbon dioxide."

And, don't forget, it's not allowed to have the engine running 'to warm up' whilst you're busy scraping and scratching.
Wow I would have never guessed so, thanks a lot because sometimes I happen to do it!!

Still, I see it being done quite regularly during winter.
