How to scrap a UK registered car, Fribourg

I brought over a UK registered car many years ago that has not been driven for years. It has been de-registered in the UK, not registered in Switzerland and I need to get rid of it, I'm i the Fribourg arae, it would be dangerous to drive and only good for spares parts. Suggestions welcome on this tricky issue.

Re: How to scrap a UK registered car, Fribourg

Its going to cost you whatever you do

advertising it is really a non starter unless its something that's worth money, not an old 911 by any chance?

You'll need to get a scrap yard to come and pick it up, which of course they will charge for, or you need to get it to them, and again depending on what it is you *may* get a few chf for it, or they may charge you to take it, we scrapped a UK car here, and they charged us 175chf iirc to take it, that was us driving it there (was fully UK legal and insured)

Re: How to scrap a UK registered car, Fribourg

Maybe I am wrong, but I always understood that a car had to be correctly imported, before it can be scrapped. Be prepared for some bad news.

Exporters are now asking for cars in roadworthy condition, with recent MFK test. The importers have become wise to the dangers of importing scrap.

Re: How to scrap a UK registered car, Fribourg

This is what I fear, no MFK, de-registered in the UK, won't drive again. Think I will have to contact a local garage to realise my options.

I see your problem. What's wrong with it? Could you make it roadworthy again, or is it a lost cause?

Have you asked the DVLA for advice? I guess you're not the first person to be in this position. Maybe they will know what's best to do.

You seem to be very keen in having life blown into this old wreck . My own, admittedly limited, experience here of trading in, on two occasions, a perfectly sound, running vehicle, for a newer one and getting almost zero in part exchange, tells me that this is a lost cause. As I posted earlier in this thread, there appears to be a firm which will collect a wreck and give the owner CHF100.- . I would be curious to know, from someone's personal experience, however, if this is a genuine offer.

No, I can quite understand why you want to scrap a 1996 Saab 7000. I was referring to comments made by Sbrinz and others about trying to scrap a car that doesn't officially exist here. If you need some paperwork before you can scrap it, then maybe the DVLA can oblige.

I would be interested to know how you get on. My UK-registered 1996 Audi is still running fine, and regularly does the run between Bern and Lancashire. But who knows - one day it might just go phut.

It has been de-registered in the UK
What do you mean by it has been de-registered?

This would seem to be very helpful information for others going forward.

Unless you are referring to UK SORN, but a SORN is only valid if vehicle is in UK, though seem to be separate terms if Motor Trader, DVLA site does not necessarily say has to be UK Motor Trader. I do believe the big issue for them is if a car is on the road without tax, insurance and safety checks etc.

Not my belief there is an environcement office if you have a way of it disintegrating.

Hopefully you have found your answer by now.

all good wishes

Cars often break down on the Highway, TCS has to pick it up, and are left for dead by foreigners. You might want to ask TCS what to do.

How much does it weigh, and what are the dimensions on it? I might be able to haul it out for you to the Garage.
