Re: Suitcase broken on almost every flight - common issue?

I have also travelled extensively for the last 20 years with only one case ever being damaged. So I cannot complain either

Re: Suitcase broken on almost every flight - common issue?

I travel a lot, and I find my luggage is most often damaged in the U.S. by United Airlines and its affiliates.

I've had brand new wheels broken off, side handles ripped off, zipper tabs ripped off with such force that the remaining part was bent and unuseable, zipper compartment torn halfway off, the list goes on. We're not talking cheap luggage either, often it's a Samsonite that is destroyed. The customer service related to damaged luggage is pretty rubbish too, I might add.

I'm always early to the airport, luggage is clearly labeled and not overstuffed, etc. There's no logical reason for some of the destruction except as swisspea described - unlucky positioning as the baggage went through the automated system and stuff got destroyed. I've not (yet, touch wood) had any luggage damaged outside the U.S.

Airlines do not normally have their own baggage handling. . It's a 3rd party company such as Swiss port or dnata etc

If I've learned anything in these last few years of traveling across the pond every few weeks it is this:

Carry-on only.

True, but my contract to get my luggage from A to B in one piece is with the airline.

Get a Briggs and Riley suitcase they are guaranteed for life. Lately it seems I am getting more damage - Delta, Air France, KLM. But when damaged I take my suitcases to the Briggs and Riley affiliate store in Zurich and they are expertly repaired and delivered to your door.

Re: Suitcase broken on almost every flight - common issue?

I did 100 flights in 2014 and roughly 75% were with Swiss. Never had any problems with my luggage. I have a Tumi carry-on which I check in every flight.

I think you are are extremely unlucky! After 15 years of flying only one of my suitcases is damaged (happened in Russia).
