Problem with insurance on newly imported car

Hello, I recently moved to Sion on an L permit for work. I plan on staying for at least a couple years for my job. I had my car shipped over from the US, its only a couple years old and I didn't want to just leave it behind, also I wanted a car while over here.

Because I owned it for over 2 years this should have been able to be brought over as a personal effect at least so I think and the moving company I used thinks. Instead at customs they cancelled my import and just gave me a form 15.30 which lets me just drive it around. Unfortunately this is completely useless as when I tried to get insurance I hit a brick wall, 3 companies all told me that they couldn't do it. I didn't get an id number from customs, just this crappy piece of paper that has 0 info except that it says I paid 25 francs. I honestly think this is just a receipt. For what? Who knows....

Nobody from the US will insure my car and so far nobody in Switzerland will either with this document. I am not going to drive without insurance. What am I supposed to do? I am brand new and can barely speak french so trying the local customs offices and the DMVs was completely useless.

Most of my searching turned up this forum but I couldn't find anyone with a similar problem as mine.

Thanks for the help

the Swiss won't insure it without Swiss plates really.

there are insurers in the US that will insure you in Europe.

Try AXA Winterthur, it worked for me, but that was 29 years ago.

They were one that I called. Maybe I will go tomorrow and talk to an agent.

As far as US insurers who would do it? Geico overseas said they don't insure anything in Switzerland. Google searching came up with Clements, I have never heard of them I am wary of getting insurance from a company I haven't heard of.

The form 15.30 is acknowledgement that you have the car here. Now you must import it,

Re: Problem with insurance on newly imported car

Recommendation: ask the forum with a well-titled thread "What insurance have you used for US vehicle in the first year in Switzerland"

Recommendation 2: Do this tomorrow when office hours begin.

The moving company attempted to do this from what I understand. I have all of my documents with customs stamps on them that were then stamped in red that say ANNULE on them. They told me they saw my permit and said no, which is why I am so confused.

Re: Problem with insurance on newly imported car

I have a feeling it's because you're on a short-term L permit. So the authorities think you'll just drive your car here for a short time and leave, thus you are not really importing it.

From the Swiss Customs Administration Fact Sheet (red emphasis mine):
Quote:
4.2 Vehicles imported for the personal use of foreign workers and foreign students
Foreign workers (holders of annual permits or short-term permits and trainees) are permitted to use a foreign vehicle in the customs area duty-free for a period of two years from the date of first entry (for example upon taking up employment) (form 15.30) even if they transfer their domicile under civil law to the customs area. The charge is CHF 25...
Full PDF here under Fact Sheet:
http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_pri...x.html?lang=en

Edit: I'm not sure you will be allowed to import it with that permit, and thus why the officers stamped it with ANNULE.

Sorry this has just been really aggravating and I just got really worried that I wandered into a catch 22 somehow by only having an L permit. Cant import the car -> cant get insurance -> cant import the car.

I tried hard to search whether an L permit holder is not allowed to import a car as a personal effect and came up with nothing. I will say that I agree with you, that is certainly the impression that I have gotten from this affair.

Re: Problem with insurance on newly imported car

Maybe you need a special Swiss plate "Z"?

Vehicle imported temporarily (max. 24 months) and registered with plates "Z" (page 9)

http://www.vd.ch/uploads/tx_vdfilesd...ehicles_01.pdf

I would contact the office de la circulation et navigation for Valais and ask them how to proceed. If they can't help go back to Swiss Customs and ask them either how you can get Swiss insurance or whether you can import the car regardless of your temporary status. After all anyone bringing a car in temporarily still needs insurance.

Unfortunately I dont have access to a french speaker right now(but I will next week) and nobody there spoke any english. I will definitely call them as soon as I can because, "An electronic certificate of liability insurance, established by a Swiss insurance company." Is holding me up. I will also go to Axa tomorrow in person to try and figure it out.

Alas, with a Z-plate you will pay many times over the price of normal insurance.

I didn't!!

I went for 3rd party - and that premium didn't change when I sold the car 2 years later - and I bought Swiss!

Re: Problem with insurance on newly imported car

Hello, I imported my motorcycle from the states and got an insurance from ZUrich Insurance on the U.S. Plates itself. There is a colleague of mine who did it with his car recently moved from the states. Both of us are on L permit.

Pm your email to me if you are interested to get a reference to the agent who helped us.

Sure I just sent you a PM, thanks!

I tried AXA in person today and they are going to call me back later. They were very wary of insuring me as I am on an L permit but they would find out and get back to me.

Re: Problem with insurance on newly imported car

After a bunch of digging I might know what my problem is. I never got a Stamm number or form 13.20 from my moving company. Now, help me out here, is this possible? Could customs have given me a temporary driving permit, 15.30(2 years long), and not given me the Stamm number to go with it? From reading all the documents I could it looks like that's not how it works, I should have gotten one.

This has been really holding me up. I have no ID number to give the insurance people when they ask for it.
