One Number Plate - Two cars - two vignettes or one?

Hi All,

I am running two cars on a common number plate - meaning I can drive only one car at a time. The OCN as well as insurance charges are 'shared'. What about the auto-route vignette? Do i HAVE TO get two separate ones - one for each car? Or is there a way around?

I know its only 50 (40?) chuffs, but, why not Switzerland Switzerland for a change - if i can, legally that is.

Thanks for your your replies

Yes you do unless you swop it over using a hair dryer, only works to change it once or twice . It what garages do if you break a windscreen.

What he said.
If you only use one car for winter and the other for summer then it is possible you could transfer the vignette but as FMF said you can only do that a couple of times. You have to remove them very carefully.

Technically you should have one for each car or just never drive on a motorway in which case you don't need a vignette at all.

If you're rich enough to afford two cars......what's 40 francs?

Heck I even get one for my bike and it's rarely on the boring roads.....

Money and thrift are two entirely different things.
That said, I was wondering about it 'on principle' : if tge system allows me to share the cost between two cars for insurance etc, why not vignettes?

Any possibility to stick it on a piece of 'interchangeable' transparent plastic?

You're paying third party for both cars and a nominal tax for the cheaper one. It's not like you pay for one car and get the other free.

To run the risk of 200 franc fine, you can do what you want.

Re: One Number Plate - Two cars - two vignettes or one?

Transferring a Swiss Motorway vignette from one windshield to another is ILLEGAL as per the NSAG/LVA federal law.

- even if you own both cars and only one is being driven at a time
- even if you are only swapping it once

Also windshield repair shops are not supposed to remove the old vignette and transfer it to the new windshield (again that's illegal). They need to charge your insurance (covered by your Teilkasko / casco partielle) for a new vignette.

If you get caught, you will have to pay Fr. 200.- fine + the price of a new vignette (Fr. 40.-).

How will they catch you? Unless you admit doing it it's not something they can prove unless they see you doing it. I don't have windscreen insurance either.

Okaaayyy.... so how about a second vignette at half cost? My point is why should I buy two when I will use only one?

Well I think you know by now that legally you can't. The transparent plastic (try cling film? ) will work only as long as you're not stopped and inspected. And I think that if you're caught having done so you'll be in much bigger trouble than the 200 chf for not having one at all.

... and if you regularly cross the border, you will be caught pretty sharpish! It is of course totally illegal to keep vignette 'loose' in a plastic sleeve or not- and has to be applied to windscreen to be valid.

Why? Because that's the way it is- for you, and me and every one else

For the insurance it is, I only pay for the more expensive of the two (cars or bikes).

I've got three swappable plates, and have been doing this for over 20 years.

It's not a requirement to have a vignette, your local border is not on a motorway so I call bulshit here. It only needs to be fixed to a windscreen if you on a motorway!...... no doubt your friendly customs guy said otherwise.....perhaps you should actually ask the question?

Perhaps you can point to the law that says it's illegal for a vignette to be 'loose' when not on a motorway?

They will look and it's easy to spot. So if you have it not stuck and cross at that type of border, take it out of the window.

Re: One Number Plate - Two cars - two vignettes or one?

As usual, no one can give a logical answer, I asked the same question some time ago and got the same answers. Yet another totally illogical Swiss way of making money. You use one number plate on 2 vehicles and stick the vignette on the number plate, unless you have perfected a way of driving 2 vehicles at once. No you cannot do that because the authorities loose money that way. Thank goodness I now live most of the year in Aus where most rules seem logical.
