Help, swiss licence has spelling error!

Dear All,

I'm hoping you can help?!

I've just noticed (after holding my swiss driving licence for over 18 months) that they have spelt my middle name wrong!

What should I do? Do I just leave it and deal with a different middle name on my ID? Or do I get it amended? How do I do that and surely I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake?

Hoping you an help!

CV

Re: Help, swiss licence has spelling error!

Sbrinz - I am here in Switzerland.

Tom - This was part of my question. Does it really matter? I guess it is a legal form of ID so it should be correct, right?

It's not a legal form of ID.

Your profile states UK.

It is important to have the correct name, as anyone might suspect license is a forgery, or for somebody else.

Re: Help, swiss licence has spelling error!

Hi Tom,

It can have repercussions if not sorted.

When I first got a Swiss license in Basel after trading in my UK one, somehow I acquired 2 ton trucks and fire engines in the vehicle categories. I didn't question it as I assumed it was some skewed translation of the UK categories. So I ignored it.

Some years later I got a letter from the Baselstadt Verkehrsamt inviting me to a medical in line with my fire-engine-driving ability. I then went back over the photocopies I had kept of the driving licenses I had sent in after the various moved I had made.

I qualified to drive in the UK and when I moved to the Netherlands in the early 1990s traded iny my UK license for a Dutch one. On moving back to the UK some years later, traded the NL one back in for a UK one. It was in that last move that the DVLA mistranslated my NL license and added the fire engine and 2T truck.

Resolving it was quite easy - just sent my license in to Baselstadt with a nice letter and they put an official stamp across the erroneous categories to disqualify them. I was no big deal to resolve, but I did have visions of being drafted in to put fires put.

To the OP - just phone the issuing authority and ask what to do - I'm quite sure. It is a simple matter to have it corrected.

Cheers,
Nick

It is important to have the correct name, as anyone might suspect license is a forgery, or for somebody else.

Shortly after our arrival in 1967 my wife went down to the gemeinde to register as required. In the evening when I got home from work I noticed that they had written my christian name as Jan - instead of Ian. The next day she went back to get it changed and was told it didn't matter much - I and J being almost the same in German. So I let it run. 'Ian' being anyway rather a difficult name I always introduced myself as 'Jan'.

My British passport was Ian and my later Swiss passport was Jan. Didn't matter much until the world started tightening up on visas and the like. then I had to be careful. Last year I went on a cruise with my younger son's family and as I was invited the paperwork was done by my son - who used Ian instead of Jan. That was only saved in the last seconds before evrything was issued.

Last year the Old Age Pension authorities in Newcastle asked for proof that I was still living and that I am who I say I am. As my pension is paid to Ian and not Jan it needed a trip to a public notary to clear the 'little' matter of my name to their satisfaction.

Be alert! It matters today.

Re: Help, swiss licence has spelling error!

Happened to me with my first name and I noticed it after a day and returned to the Strassenverkehrsamt immediately. I got every kind of apology from a very red faced lady to which I responded "dont worry it doesn't matter really" and I got "yes it does". I received it back with a word punched in holes through it and a corrected version in the post 2 days later.

Just contact them, point it out, and get it amended. The least you can expect is that they spell your fricken name right on something you will be carrying around with you 24/7.

Yeah, there's nothing at all annoying about an official license ID that you paid for having a basic schoolboy spelling error on it, is there? Real mens men wouldn't give two hoots about something so utterly insignificant like that, would they Tim?
