How to price a used car when wanting to sell

Dear EF,

We are thinking of selling our car which we bought in CH.
I will advertise it on the EF, but only when I am sure I have calculated a price that will be attractive.

Other than trying to find a similar car on the internet are there any other sites where you can put in the credentials of the car and get a going rate?

I know AutoScout, are there any other reputable car selling sites, or even dealers to look at?

Thanks for your help

GT

Re: How to price a used car when wanting to sell

1. See what a dealer is offering you cash

2. Offer it here for a little bit more, depending on price, say 1000 CHF more

3. If you look at autoscout take the average there and divide by 2, that is the real price in the real world in a private sale (if you want to sell)

Re: How to price a used car when wanting to sell

All depends on the car, condition, spec, age, km.

There is no absolutes - but private sales get nowhere near what you want. Rough rule of thumb - the actual value is 2/3 of a dealer price. Private - depending on the car - will either be closer to the 2/3 or closer to the 3/3.

Re: How to price a used car when wanting to sell

Cheaper cars in my experience go well on car4you.ch. big bonus is that for private customers the ad is free for 30days.

Autoscout has a better audience for more expensive cars. Ads are not free.

Unfortunately Switzerland is not a sellers car market, buyers haggle hard. Prices are not helped by current eur chf rate for those prepared to by cars over the border.

My advice is to advertise the car competitively online. If it is worth 5000 then advertise for 5250 not 6500. It will sell easier. People understand a good deal and will not haggle below 5000. Attract more attention like this

I'd go at 4,999chf - and get it covered by the 5,000chf search on Autoscout.

Based on what I have seen these last 2 weeks dealers ran advertised stock down in December and have the hit market with fresh cars this week - around 200 new cars around Zurich, under 5000chf, per day!!!
