Tram 8 and GA

I wonder if someone can clarify the rules on getting the tram 8 from Dreirosenbrucke to the Rheinfelden centre:

- If you have a GA, do you need to buy any supplement for the outward or return journey?
- If you have no GA/ 1/2 card what is the appropriate ticket to buy?

Re: Tram 8 and GA

I'm not sure if I read this correctly, but I think it means a GA travel holder can travel anywhere along the #8 tram so long as he doesn't cross the country border. But theoretically could get off before the border, walk across, then get a tram on the other side for the rest of the journey?

http://www.triregio.info/tickets/allgemeine-hinweise/

I think there is also some kind of connection ticket to allow you to cross the border. anyone know where to buy this using the machines and how much it costs?

Re: Tram 8 and GA

I read this as saying that the GA is valid on tram 8 from the border to the end point of the line (Weil bahnhof) and back again.

This is in direct contrast to the usual situation (eg bus 38 to Whylen) where you have go buy a ticket for the German part of your journey.

BS to Weil/Rh: Reduced fare.
Weil/Rh. to BS: Full fare.

Make sure you don't confuse Rhein-Center EKZ with Rheinfelden twin cities (Kr Lö/Kt AG)!

Thanks. I did mean the Rhein-Center. At least that's what I think the shopping centre next to the bridge between france and germany is called.

Re: Tram 8 and GA

Now you are confusing me. In the bvb doc it says:

"In Abweichung zu den Bestimmungen des grenzüberschreitenden Verkehrs* sind U-Abo, Generalabonnement (GA) und Junior-/ Enkelkarte in den Trams der Linie 8 zwischen Landesgrenze und Weil am Rhein Bahnhof / Zentrum gültig. "

So GA is valid between the the Rhein Bahnhof and the border. (In addition to the part wholly in Switzerland).

"* Halbtax-Abo, GA sowie Junior- und Enkelkarte sind grenzüberschreitend nicht gültig. Für Fahrten ins RVL-Gebiet bezahlen Kinder von 6 bis 16 Jahren den ermässigten Preis. Für die Rückfahrt in das TNW-Gebiet gilt eine Altersgrenze von 4 bis 14 Jahren."

I understand this to mean that the 1/2 tax and GA are not valid for actually crossing the border, even they are valid on the stretches of track on both sides.

Re: Tram 8 and GA

GA is valid on the entire Tram 8 route. A Halftax can be used to buy a ticket at a reduced price TO Germany but not back again.

For those without GAs, a simple 2-zone ticket will get you there (halftax discount valid on the ticket you buy to get TO Germany), as will a "tri-regio" 24-hour pass.

Tram8 goes into Weil am Rhein proper; the Rheincenter is just over the border and you could probably get on the tram at the border for just a zone 1 ticket (halftax valid both ways). I don't know where the stop is relative to the border so can't confirm that as I've not taken the tram into Germany.

It would make sense for the GA to be valid along the whole line and also for the border crossing, but I haven't seen anything that says it is so, and only seen things like the above which say the GA is not valid for the border crossing.

Re: Tram 8 and GA

My understanding is that the GA shouldn't be valid, was documented as not being valid, but when the line opened they changed their minds and allowed it to be used. But only on Tram 8 (ie not any of the buses which also ply that route).

So anything written from December onwards takes precedence.

The tram stop is right at the border crossing (where you get the papers stamped for VAT) and its a Basel tram ticket machine, not one for the German network, so anything valid for Basel should work for the tram at that stop.

Re: Tram 8 and GA

I read today on one of the stops (underneath the line plans) that GA and UAbo are valid for tram 8 even into Weil am Rhein.

Not 100% sure of the exact wording, but something like that, enough to continue going there without any extra tickets.

Neither of you is certain, so why risk a fine for 1 or 2 stops?

This should suffice:
http://www.tram8.info/uploads/media/...Tarife_web.pdf
(Das U-Abo ist im grenzüberschreitenden Verkehr ausschliesslich auf der Tramlinie 8 gültig.)

For U-Abo, it works.
For GA, seems not (GA is SBB's product anyway, not BVB/TNW's).

So I wasn't wrong in the beginning, when I said I read it at the station (which seems to be "indated" )

Re: Tram 8 and GA

I've seen this matter discussed at length on *ahem* other forums and it would seem the communication of this is worse than poor but that GA is valid.

This is not without precedence as you can use the GA on the Italian portion of the Cenovalli railway, and also from Koblez to Waldshut.
