Re: New Evening GA card

At Chf 3655.-- (tks Phil) it's incredible value.

For a Brighton-London-Brighton season ticket, and only this route which is about 1hour, maybe 50-60 miles (?) cost a massive GBP 4'304.-- or at a rate of Chf/GBP of 1.40 = Chf 6'000.--

This is far in excess of most peoples' MONTHLY salary !

As i said, if you end up trying to make to many differenc tcombinations, for nights only, for nights and weekends, for weekends only, for general use, and whatever else, the system becomes top heavy and you end up with a situation like in the UK.

The tickets are already heavily subsidised here by taxes, indeed the GA is loss making for CFF already !

Re: New Evening GA card

I think the best option for those who travel mainly on weekends is to get a halb tax and buy 6 packs of Tageskarten for 290 CHF. A tageskarte works out at 48 CHF so if you travel just one day each weekend you are saving money that way.

Re: New Evening GA card

You are talking about 9 o'clock pass. This one is not valid over weekends. Weekend one will cost CHF 365.- for 6 days which works out CHF 60.85.- per day.

Yeah, I don't live in the UK, I live here. I'm pretty sure there are countries where tickets are much cheaper than SBB too, but I don't live in those countries either.
And I'm not asking for a million different combinations, just three, full GA, after 7pm GA and weekend GA. Besides, the SBB ticket staff are a lot more savey than the BR staff, and I'm sure they can cope. They've always found the cheapest ticket option for me, sometimes with very complicated conditions, whereas BR just sell you the first ticket that comes up on the system.

Taking the average salary in Switzerland, public transport prices, especially season tickets are low, partly because the real price is subsidized already.

SBB staff are probably not "more savy" than BR, it's just there are not 50 different prices for the same journey !

You got from Geneva to zurich at whatever time you want, buy your ticket on the spot or days in advance, the price is the same. There is no "cheaper" option on Swiss railways, it's the same or half price, if yo uhave the card.

By adding options, you just end up with an overly complicated system, open to abuse and less savy personnel !

I'm talking five options for GA (normal, student, student after 7pm, after 7pm and weekend), so one more than they currently offer, not fifty different options for each individual ticket. But I guess you have enough money to have a GA so who cares right?

Re: New Evening GA card

SBB is protected against competition from buses within Switzerland. However, bus travel to Germany is MUCH cheaper than by train and it is often faster. You can get to Stutgart from Zurich for just 11 euro (and a shorter journey time). An express ticket to Munich costs just 24.50 and takes 3 hours 45 minutes (faster than the train)

But it's not just about 1 extra AG, once you do this there is anothe rvalid reason for another type of ticket/pass, then this escalates and you end up with 50 different options.

British Rail have worked bloody hard over last 20 years to make the system incomprehensible, but they had to start somewhere, and credit where credit is due, they have done a first rate job on it !

Tripples all around please

Any yes, you're right i do have a GA and have done for several years, it's EXCELLENT value for something in a country where most complaints from foreigners are bitching about the exhorbitant cost of everything !

This is not true.
Supersaver Tickets have been around for quite a while and are a great thing if you have precise travel plans and don't mind taking a specific train on a specific date. (I just did another post on supersaver tickets recently.)
A standard one-way ticket from Bern to Zürich HB, with half-fare card (Halbtax-Abo) costs CHF 25.-, whereas Supersaver Tickets are available for as little as CHF 12.60 (e.g. on Sundays, using "slower" IR or RE trains which take 82 mins instead of IC trains which take 56 mins).

Re: New Evening GA card

I agree that a GA for nights and weekends would be useful. I can't travel far during the week because of my 2 school-age kids but I would love something for the weekends. At the GA price, it isn't really worth it to me.

No one mentioned the geminde tageskarten - the daily GA cards offered through your geminde. You have to plan ahead because they have a limited number daily but for day trips, it can be considerably cheaper.
