Warning lights on after snow chains attached to wheels

My spouse is on a skiing trip just over the border in the French Alps and he needed to put snow chains on the front tyres (Skoda Octavia).

He says that the brake warning and anti-skid warning lights came on after he'd put the snow chains on, but he was almost at his destination so continued his journey (it was at night).

Has anyone else had a similar problem on their Skoda?

He was hoping that after re-starting the ignition that the lights might have gone off, but unfortunately they haven't. He may abandon his ski holiday tomorrow (as more snow is forecast) and try to get to a Skoda garage. The Internet is very patchy at the ski chalet he's at - he wants to know the closest Skoda garage to La Plagne, but I can't find anywhere.....is anyone familiar with this region who could advise which towns I should be searching for? Thank you.

Might be a similar issue.

I just googled "snowchains abs warning" and also got lots of articles saying it's probablysafer to drive in snow with ABS off where possible. So if it's just an ABS warning (and not a complete brake warning) I'd suggest ignoring it and getting it fixed once you're back.

From Internet,
Skoda garage is 60 Km down the hill,
in Albertville, on a round-about

J. Lain Auto
1 rue Robert Piddat
73204 Albertville

but any VW garage should be able to help.

Re: Warning lights on after snow chains attached to wheels

Is your Skoda 4x4?
If yes, did he fit chains to all four wheels?

Some manufacturers of vehicles with permanent four wheel drive and/or hydraulic coupling four wheel drive, stipulate that chains should only be affixed to front wheels, and definitely not all four.

If husband reads the owners manual, pages 139 and 210 might be useful (Snow chains)

That is probably true. But he wants the car checked out, as the Brake and ABS/ASR warning lights remain on.

Thank you all so much for your prompt replies! It's a huge help and greatly appreciated!

(I think the car manual may be written in German, he wouldn't understand any technical terms not written in English).

The car isn't a 4x4 btw and he did put the chains on the front tyres. I forgot to mention that the car has an automatic gearbox.

Re: Warning lights on after snow chains attached to wheels

Adrianlondon nailed it.

Once a year i have to fix an ABS sensor line because on this. With these warning lights on you will have normal braking but no ABS function when needed. Requires a new cable, or both sides, replaced.

It takes a few hours, plus or minus, if they have parts in stock because they have to be spliced into the existing wiring harness on one end.

Drive with extra caution until it's fixed.

Re: Warning lights on after snow chains attached to wheels

It is possible to have caught the ABS wiring and damaged it. Brakes work but not the ABS. If it was me I would get it checked when home... but it's me.
