Public Transportation System in Canton of Zurich

Hi guys,

I am trying to understand the public transportation system in Zurich. I am moving there from USA. I dont understand German so I looked at SBB website about all ticket options and I am confused.

First of all can anyone briefly explain to me how it works?

My questions are:

- With one ticket, I can use for all kinds of public transportation like buses, trams, train, ferry etc.

- Is it possible to buy a ticket only for buses or trams or trains?

Thank you very much.

I know little about Zurich, but being on your side of the Atlantic I am still awake!

Try the Zurich Public Transport (VBZ) site, you may find it far more informative than the SBB site.

Only poor immigrants from Eastern Europe use public transport. Everyone else drives everywhere in their top of the range Audi or Porsche 911**.

You should be able to get the SBB site in English - it has tons of information.

When you buy a ticket it is for zones of travel, not specific types of travel. This means it's goof for trains, busses, trams and boats. The price is determined by how far you are traveling.

There are a variety of day tickets, 1/2 price tickets, etc.

They speak English at all the larger SBB offices (maybe even the small ones, I'm not sure) and they are very helpful and will explain the best ticket for wherever you are going.

The transportation system here is amazing! We moved almost 2 years ago from CO and sold our cars before coming. We don't have a car here and have never had a problem. In fact, we love the freedom!

For us personally, we bought the GA's, yearly passes, which allow travel anywhere in Switzerland. We take advantage of this and go places every weekend. It's also nice when you are new here and don't understand it all to never worry about getting on the wrong train because your ticket always covers you. I also have never missed a train because the ticket machine didn't work or I was running late and needed to validate a ticket or buy a ticket. The GA is expensive but the more family members that have it the cheaper it becomes. For us, it was totally worth it. And in the end, far cheaper then paying for a car! (Factoring in monthly payments, gas, maintenance, tires, etc.)

If you have specific questions feel free to PM me.

There is a ticket called a General Abonnement, which is good all over
Switzerland for almost all Buses, Trains, Ferries, etc.

It costs 3655 per year. Here is the link:
http://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-and...ga/adults.html

The question is whether you Need that much. You can also buy
an ticket that just covers Zürich. It just depends on where you
want/Need to go.

If you don't get a GA, it is useful to have a Halbtax or Half-fare Card.

Then you can buy all tickets at 50% off the Price. This is good
for occasional travel.
