Re: Buying a car from garage - negotiations?

When I bought my car in GE, I asked carefully if there were any discounts to be given.

I was told - without as much as a hesitation - no, but he could remove the 12 month warranty which would lower the asking price.

I paid the asking price and got the warranty as advertised.
Those types of warranties are pretty worthless and cost very little as once you examine them carefully, they cover very little.

Sorry to prick your bubble

In the past, even recent- asking for discounts for cars and bartering was just not the done thing. But with the recent hike in CHF- car dealers are saying that they just have to accept to sell for 15 to 20% less- and that people are indeed haggling at the mo. As reported in our local paper last week (Neuchâtel Express)
exactly my point...i have been following the car market via comparis for some months now, little more intensive last 2 months...and some cars are there for months, with 3-4 reductions totaling 5000+ CHF...which is already 20% off...and i can imagine it going further down in the following months

Re: Buying a car from garage - negotiations?

My experience last weekend was in a BMW garage showing the "Premium selection" logo.

First impression was already bad enough - the cars were dirty inside and out, service pending (service indicators on dashboard), and fuel tanks empty with remaining range of approx 5kms.

Any price negotiations? No way.
Any extras? No.
Can you check the detailed service history for me in the system? No can't do.
Warranty? No, but on second thought "we maybe able to do something but it will cost a lot". When asked about the conditions of the warranty, it was 20/80 cost ratio (they pay 20% of the bill ... some warranty, huh?)
Will you at least clean the car? Sure, we clean all the cars on final sale. The delivery charge is 500 CHF.
Can I make a reservation till tomorrow? No, first come first served.

Some customer service they have there!

The day after we went to see another car sold privately. Kind, no pushing for sale, every imperfection shown.
Will you accept (price-10%)? Sure. Deal.

My best advice - buy private. That car was listed on anibis. Not ricardo/autoscout or similar.

In the weeks before the change in the CHF/EUR we've been in discussions with a Subaru dealer about buying a demonstrator, by phone and email. Dealer is 2 hours by car away.

They've been very pleasant and happy to negotiate on price, finance terms and part exchange price and cost of some extras.

The reduction on price was because we showed them a very similar spec car that is closer and cheaper (although less interesting colour!)

It's not a problem to ask.
I agree. The key is dont get angry, personal etc. and its probably best not to adopt the poker strategy of leaving emotion at the door. But not too much emotion either otherwise you will get screwed.

Asking for extras is a good idea. Sometimes one party can offer something that is of little value to them but the opposite for you. Maybe the dealer has heaps of winter tyres with rims he wants to shift. Who knows.

The best option is be honest and look for a win-win outcome. Of course that all depends on wether you want to screw the dealer.

Re: Buying a car from garage - negotiations?

In my case I bought a second hand car 3 years ago and the garage owner was offering a 3 years warranty with the car. I considered the warranty as unnecessary (I knew it's a robust car), so I got to negotiate over that - I got the price reduced in exchange of only 3 months warranty. Both me and garage owner were happy with the deal. And it was a good call to get rid of the warranty.

I hope this helps.
