How does the public transport works in Lake Leman

Hello everyone, I've been looking for places to live near Lausanne and I found out the French margin of Lake Leman is cheaper than Switzerland's part.

In order to live in a French city and study in EPFL, I would need to get a boat to Lausanne's shore and also a bus/metro to arrive in the university everyday.

For a PhD student, is this viable? The discount I get with rent in the French side of lake is little if compared with how much the public transport costs? Also, how does it all work actually? Can I have a single card and use boats, buses and metro?

Thank y'all.

Before you look into public transport options, have you checked whether as a Brazilian national you are allowed to stay in France while working and studying in Switzerland?

Check www.sbb.ch/en for timetables and ticket options. EPFL is a bit outside Lausanne, so the entire commute will take atleast an hour

I see. At first I actually just wanted to know about costs of transportation. Visa-related issues are subjects I'm still studying which would fit the best for me. Thank you.

I don't think living in France will be an option for you if you are Non-EU. You will just have a permit to live in Switzerland.

Hi,

Not sure about prices for the boats and all but as for how it works:

you would need one type of card for the boats. The company is CGN. I'm not familiar with the system.

in Lausanne, you can get a Mobilis card for Lausanne (2 zones, 11 and 12) which allows you to take buses, metro and train between Lausanne and Renens (so all ways of getting to EPFL) ( http://www.mobilis-vaud.ch/ )

Hope that helps!
