Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

i actually prefer cash when selling a car. with the bank account there is always a delay where one of the two parties has to trust the other. With cash you do the handover at the same time.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

I'm all for groaning at jerks or people too lazy to search or whatnot, but I'm having a hard time understanding why the OP is being serial groaned for this particular thread. It's not an unreasonable question - cash transfers in that amount are not the norm where most of us hail from.

What's up, guys? Man up and post some explanations!

Aby country that has a note of the value of Chf 1'000.-- (10 X more than biggest US note, 12 X more than biggest UK note...) has to have a lot of cash transactions going on.

The EU has a Euro 500.-- note because the Germans insisted on it, they too like cash rather than debt and don't trust the banks so much.

Here it is very normal to transact business in cash

must be the LOL-thread of the year.
Having been a private banker in Switzerland for the last few years is precisely the reason why I have issues accepting cash.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

Many thanks for all your help. One more question please. I understand I have to go to the transport office in Hinwil and cancel my ownership/registration (on the fahrzeugausweis. Do I have to return my number plates as well. My new car will be arriving on the 20th of March and I would love to keep my current number plates - any ideas please.

I have no clue what the op is selling, but I'd be very curious to see all the groaners accept cash for a 100k+ car.

Yes.

But you can get them back within a year.

No, you can't.

You have to hand them in, but can get them back within a year if you tell them that that's what you intend to do.

Tom
You don't even have to tell them here. They automatically keep them for up to a year and you can get them back anytime on request. They then very kindly present you with a bill for 'storing' them for you.

Having said that when I sold a car and bought a new one a week later I hadn't got around to handing in the plates ( but I has cancelled the grey card) so I just took them with me when I registered the new car. I told them I wanted to use them for the new car and there was no issue at all. Given the short time frame the OP also has he could probably do the same thing but it may be the sort if thing that varies from canton to canton.
Of course I was paying insurance for the week I had no car as they won't cancel insurance without the plates being handed in but it was a minimal sum.

That's very true but it's not an unreasonable question to ask for someone who's not from here and not used to the system here.

We were all new here once, even you, and confronted by things that were weird to us. It's better to ask a simple question to find out how things work than to get ripped off because you didn't know how things were done.

You can keep them yourself for up to 2 weeks*, after that you have to hand them in.

*in GL, but this is the sort of thing I would expect varies from canton to canton, so do check.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

The Swiss are so laid back when it comes to money.

I bought a flat recently and wanted to pay cash. Of course, I didn't have enough but the seller said I could just photocopy the money so long as I cut the copies up into roughly the right size so they'd fit in his briefcase. Unfortunately, I then got ripped off as he hasn't refunded the amount I paid in photocopy fees. Nice flat though, and it cost me nothing as I kept the original notes I used.

It depends on the car and the insurance you have but it's often less expensive to keep the plates for a couple of weeks and pay the insurance than it is to pay the fee for handing them in and getting them back again.

It only works if the time is short of course and may not be possible in every canton. ( although from other replies it appears to be the case)

Cash seems to be no issue in CH. If you deem the buyer to be on the "up and up," I'd go with it.

I have no clue what the op is selling, but I'd be very curious to see all the groaners accept cash for a 100k+ car.
There is no indication of the price of the car or what it is, unless I missed that, so where did you pull 100k from?.

Cash is simply not an issue here, people can offer to pay for goods in whatever manner they chose, and it is up to the seller to accept it. The OP said he preferred a bank tx, the buyer wants cash, simply agree the terms document a cash payment and thats that.

I groaned as I have sold many cars in the past and never once not accepted cash when offered, a few times a cheque (those were the days) was offered and I simply said the car stayed until funds cleared. Further, I would not consider to "check him out on the internet", and certainly would not start a thread in a public forum about it. A banker showing distrust.... oh the irony
