Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

Hi,

I have advertised my car for sale and have a potential buyer who is very interested. Only issue is that he wants to pay cash. When I said I preferred a bank transfer, he says that he buys a car along with his parents and therefore it is all too much of a hassle.

He seems to be a decent bloke and I have checked him out on the internet - all seems to be in order.

Still I want to know the risks I will be taking in accepting cash (apart from the obvious ones such as terrorism, drug money) and what can I do to mitigate any potential future risks. Also what evidence should I have to record the actual transaction?

Any input is most appreciated

Can you meet him at a bank? He hands over the cash, you deposit it in your account, once the bank accept the money you hand over the keys.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

I've bought and sold cars for cash before, no problem. I think you know when it's dodgy.. I had a lad call up once and say "I want to buy your car, I need it tonight, what is the least you'll take for it?" … no interest in anything about the car, just I need it tonight …… I was like "Hmmm I don't think so matey" .

None.

Cash is still perfectly acceptable in CH, thankfully. I've even walked into a Post Office and asked for 60k in cash to pay for a car. The only problem was that they apologised for only having 30k in one thousand franc notes, and did I mind having the rest in 500s.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

This is Switzerland, cash is the norm rather than the exception.

We've bought most of our cars and motorcycles, new and used, with cash.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

Thanks a lot folks - that is comforting. One last question (moan at me as much as you like, I am a rather cautious person).

The potential buyer is coming this weekend for a test drive. Will it be too rude if i ask to be in the car when he goes for a test drive or am I now losing it?

Just don't want this bloke to drive off with the car? Whats the normal practice please?

I wouldn't even think about it, either as a buyer or a seller. Of course you'd be in the car with him. Why would you think anyone would expect otherwise?

It's your car, he wants it. He accepts your (fair) terms and pays, he gets it. He doesn't, no car. Solved.

The devil is in the detail !

I have great difficulty in believing a Post office or a bank would only have Chf 30k in Chf 1k notes....It must have been a very SMALL branch !

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

paying cash for car in Switzerland is very much the normal. test driving a car, as an owner I would want to be in it and would think that normal.

What you need to know is how to cancel the grey book so that your car insurance is also terminated.

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

I paid cash for my car last year.

-The owner drove it to FR on her plates;
-I had prepared a nice indian lunch for them;
-we went togeatger to OCN post lunch, where she handed over the Grey Card and signed ONE paper;
-we drove back to my place, took off her plates ffom the car, I handed over the cash
-we bid good bye.

Simples?

Re: Selling a car - buyer wants to pay cash

Its important to cancel the car log book (permis de circulation). I didnt realise this when I sold my car to a garage. Because it wasnt in working order he didnt register his ownership of it for a month, and I ended up paying the car tax on it for this period of time. I had sold my previous two cars to garages with no problem, because they registered their ownership immediately after sale.

You should have returned your plates, then you don't need to pay the tax.

I had already put my plates on my new car. Even showing the sales contract at the vehicle centre had no sway.

Then the amount of extra tax would max out at 50 chef a year assuming the same engine size. There is something missing from your story.

12 CHF a month is the full car tax, who is kidding who?
