Monthly GA Question

Hello,

I will be staying in Switzerland for 4 moths and would like to buy a Monthly GA for Young Adults.
I know that I cannot get one by myself, but can, in principal, a Swiss buy and pay for a GA in my name?
I read somewhere on this forum that it is possible, but I have no idea if it actually is.
Thank you!

Re: Monthly GA Question

Thank you for the response, but I did study the SBB website. I do not want to opt for an Annual Abo as it is too expensive, even if you return it after 4 months.
I wanted to know if a Swiss could buy the Abo and pay monthly in my name.

Re: Monthly GA Question

You can buy one immediately you arrive here at any railway station, with a manned ticket counter. They issue you a temporary GA, and send you the plastic GA after a few days. You need a photograph, your passport, and a signature.

Reading the website, it looks like you need a B permit.

Re: Monthly GA Question

There is no monthly GA. There's only the type of yearly GA where you pay every month ("GA im Abonnement" or similar). The issue with this type of GA is that SBB will run a credit check on you because you will be billed monthly.
Being a new arrival and probably not having the appropriate permit, you will fail that credit check.

What you can do is buy a yearly GA, pay by cash or credit card and return it after four months. That's a rather pricey option though because of the way the refund is calculated. SBB will deduct 23% of the purchase price for the 1st month and 7% for every month thereafter, so you'll end up paying 44% of the yearly price for four months.

Re: Monthly GA Question

There exists a monthly GA, click "Ordering the GA travelcard by subscription via invoice" in the link from glowjupiter. Minimum duration is four months. Current price is 330 CHF per month.

The person billed needs a permit, but it can be someone else than the user of GA. I don't expect any problems, especially if you go to a large train station. In the smaller ones the staff might not know the details of less popular offers. I never tried ordering it on the Internet.

Re: Monthly GA Question

Yearly GA for 4 months: 3655 *(0.23 + 3 x 0.07) = 1608.20
Anyone can get a Yearly GA as it can be paid on the spot.

Monthly GA for 4 Months (which is coincidentally minimum duration): 4 x 330 = 1320
Only receiver of monthly bills needs at least a B permit. Actual owner of GA can be any person. Receiver of bill is liable.

SBB GA GTC

So, yes if you find a person, Swiss or a foreigner with B or C permit, which is willing to take the risk and vouch for you, a monthly GA is possible and cheaper than the yearly one.

Re: Monthly GA Question

I can't see on SBB website, but I believe there's a kind of 'transferable' GA? eg. not in 1 specific name and can be swapped about between the family?

Re: Monthly GA Question

I think you just need to fill the form, attach the requested documents from you and from the person that will receive the bill, and either send it by post or take it to an SBB office. I guess with the first option you will have to wait some time while they process your request. On the other side, if you take it to an SBB office, they can offer you a temporal GA, but you will have to pay the first month immediately. In my case, I have a student GA, and take my papers to the SBB office. They charged me the first month for the Adult GA, and then discounted it from the bills of the first two months.

You think they train people differently for small stations ?

The system here is relatively un complicated with regards to ticketing

Yes, and it's very expensive, Chf 10k or something, not even sure it exists any longer, it was designed for companies.

If yo loser it, then that's it, it's not replacable before you ask...

No, I didn't write that. You might remember less from your training if you work in a smaller station, where people do not often buy less typical tickets.

I was misinformed a couple of times at a smaller station, and had to go to Zurich HB for correct information.

I'm repeating myself here, but it's not a monthly GA but a yearly GA with monthly payment.

You will receive a GA card that is valid for one full year.

Yes, you can return it after four months, but only if still have the original GA card. If you lose the original card and get a replacement card you cannot return the GA before 12 months are over for obvious reasons.

Re: Monthly GA Question

Maybe things have changed, I thought the GA was always for a year but you could choose the pay monthly option but this is not correct. It clearly states "The minimum duration for the GA travelcard on a subscription basis is four months. Thereafter you can decide month by month whether to extend your travel card".

Copy paste straight from SBB:-

Ordering the GA travelcard by subscription via invoice.
Would you rather pay for your GA travelcard in smaller, regular amounts? Then we recommend the GA travelcard by subscription. This lets you determine the number of months of unlimited mobility and pay by monthly invoice. The minimum duration for the GA travelcard on a subscription basis is four months. Thereafter you can decide month by month whether to extend your travelcard.

Our Ticket Shop will help you by automatically filling out the order form. Simply enclose the required documents and submit everything by post. You will receive your GA travelcard conveniently by post within 10 days in a plastic card format.

The four months rule has been in place since at least 2010. I know for sure because I used to have one of those back then and planned to keep it just for 6-7 months. (Turned out differently, but that's another story )

I was surprised to see just 1 month GA but it exists. It costs CHF 410.- which is more compared to the yearly GA with monthly payment.
