Dealer trade in vs private sale

Hi.

I'm in the process of buying a new car and had very much wanted to avoid the hassle of selling my current car privately by doing a part-exchange trade in. However, the dealer is offering me only 5k, and I would like to get an idea of how much more I might *realistically* expect to get from a private sale.

Eurotax valuation is:
Achat/Reprise:CHF 7'757.-
Vente:CHF 10'133 -

The same make/model (Volvo C30) with similar registration date / milage is advertised on autoscout ranging from 9k to 15k.

The car had an expertise 5 months ago and is in good condition.

I'd appreciate any feedback from those familiar with the car market here: is the dealer's offer unreasonably low? Should I to expect to get anywhere near the autoscout advertised prices (which look like mostly sales from garages rather than private individuals) through private sale?

The offer is about what you will get with a private sale on EF if you want to sell within 30 days. Most sellers get 2/3 of their asking prices if they are lucky. With the strengthening of the CHF you may end up with less if you get greedy.

I sold 4 vehicles last year when I left CH, I achieved 30-65% of auto scout advertised prices, sale time took from 4 hours to 6 weeks.

try a different dealer.... or you could (if you can afford it) have 2 cars and that will give you all the time you need to sell the old one.

Re: Dealer trade in vs private sale

Thanks to both of you for the feedback.

Sounds like the Eurotax trade in price would be a reasonable target, so 2.7k above the dealer offer, but no guarantee to get that...

Anthony, do you know what would be the logistics of keeping both cars until the old one is sold? Since car plates here belong to the person rather than the car, I would be transferring the plates to the new car. Would I have to register a second set of plates for the (hopefully) short period until the old car is sold? Or can I swap the plates between the 2 cars whenever somebody wants to test drive?

You do not need plates on both vehicles. You can transfer plates between several cars (do a search on the forum and several topics will pop up) you only get 1 set though so you can manually transfer them when testdriving...

Re: Dealer trade in vs private sale

Purely for my own interest, if you look at cars on Comparis, they have an "Market Price" which is compared to the "Selling Price" which is used for the savings potential. How realistic are these values? i.e. one Volvo C30 [1] is listed as having a market price of 8'700, but selling for 7'700. Almost everything I look at is listed under the "Market Price"? So do these values have any basis in reality? Or should we always start looking at 80% of the value?

Re: Dealer trade in vs private sale

If you want to sell a car privately and do so quickly - go to autoscout, search for similar cars, price yours 500chf lower and wait for the phone to ring.

Whatever you do don't overprice it from the start - be realistic - accept that every CHF above 5,000 is a win - and taking 6,000chf after 1 week is likely to be better than taking 6,000chf after 3 months.
