Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

i can't decide - first car i owned in the US, a 1984 VW Jetta GLI, and a 2004 audi TT we had the last year we lived in the US. Both had great acceleration, fun to drive. The Jetta was a pain in the ass though. VW built the cars in Germany w/o air conditioning, and added a/c once the cars hit the US - all sorts of alternator problems. I think i had 4 the first 5 years i had the car.

You are not allowed to categorize; fun, comfort, practicality, power, prestige, nostalgia etc. is not allowed. You just have to pick one car as the best car.

My choice is the VW Beetle. It is the best car because snow will not stop it. It is like a snow sled with an outboard motor. It goes everywhere.
2005 Pontiac GTO. 400hp coming from a 6 liter LS2 engine. The 6 speed shifter had a throw so long it felt like you were driving an 18 wheeler (lorry for the Brits), but that was balls of fun for 30 grand.

Might have been the fact that I was only 25 at the time, though, and it was my first "fun" car.

Mid to late '60s Beetle. Orange with 'Flower Power' decals, held together with spit and chewing gum, ran on a wing and a prayer. Bought in 1981 for something like $100. It was my first car - and thus the best ever.

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

My 1999 Ford Focus wagon.

The worst was a '63 Corvette, even after I made some serious suspension improvements (though it was much better than when I received it).

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Manual V8 R8 in a very tight track was a nice experience, but I'd have to say the best was a friend's friend's friend's Aston Martin Rapide that I took for a quick spin. Those downshifts with the bleeps in the throttle are amazing.

Best experience though was a 30Km 8 tenths drive in a friend's S2000 with him in the passenger seat giving me good feedback and urging me to push more. A year later he basically ruined the car with a supercharger and 380 horsepower. 4th gear was braking loose in the awful Greek pavement... Best driver I've taken a drive with.

Also very fun a friend's 850Ci. Cult car, ridiculous torque figures, and lots of fun in the playground called North Suburbs of Athens

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

If we're going for worst cars, then the Ferrari Mondial, the first Ferrari I ever drove, I'd built it up in my head to be the best car in the world, this car would be the best at everything, the reality was somewhat different, the car was at a dealers, was pretty new, looked in mint condition, all well and good.
And then it all went wrong, you can't just jump in and drive off, you had to start it and let the oil get upto temp, 20 minutes later I was allowed to drive it, they have stupidly huge steering wheels, like a bus, and the brakes, ha, brakes, non existent, heavy steering, crap brakes, not fast, infact not good at anything, drove a 308 some time later and that was no better, churning out crap like that I have no idea how ferrari actually survived.

A former boss had one, it was always in the shop.

The '63 'Vette belonged to another former boss, he gave it to me to see what I could do to make it drivable. (new clutch, poly urethane bushings, rebuilt the shift linkage, etc.)

They survived with the V12s, hanged on through some BS in the start of the di Montezemolo (I'm looking at you 348), and then slowly and steadily started churning out better and better cars.

I mean, trim might fall off in an F12 but it sure as hell ain't a bad car

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Actually one of the most enjoyable cars I ever drove was a friend's debadged Montego Turbo which he deliberately had painted beige with plastic hubcaps, National Trust stickers and a Garfield in the back

Basically this

Became this

The idea being that it was wolf in sheep's clothing with a 7 sec 0-60 mph and a top speed pushing 130. He'd let me take it out and we'd go looking for Renault 5s, Celica's, Supra's, Golf GTis etc.. to bait and then completely blow away. The shocked, disbelieving looks in the rearview was worth all the derision from driving around in such a skip.

Happy days

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

when I was very young and stupid I put a very large engine in the back of my VW beetle, even with 4 mates in the car it would pee all over just about every hot hatch out there, shame it wasn't very reliable, but that was otherwise a totally standard 1200, so drum brakes all round, cross ply tyres etc, you could wheel spin it in every gear great in a straight line, but terrible in the corners, the number of times I spun that thing on normal roads its amazing I'm still here.

Mine would pull 110MPH with four people in the car.

1600, dual twin choke Holley carbs (one on each head), race cam, pretty open exhaust, dual point distributor, lowered suspension, modified roll bars, type 3 rear drums (much larger than the originals), dual oil coolers, 3mm shaved off the heads to bring the compression up to 10:1, etc.

12MPG around town.

Tom

2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5. UNSTOPPABLE!

I have to admit, though - my 2007 Toyota Sienna minivan (AWD) is a good runner up. Took it through the Grand Staircase Escalante (north-south) without issue (the looks we received from all the bubba's were priceless) and it actually handled better than the 4Runner in the snow. Always felt the family were safe when they were in it.

1700 big bore, with webber twins, electronic ignition and dual quiet pack exhaust, no idea why they called them quiet pack and it was the loudest thing you ever heard.

Used to blow holes in the exhaust every couple of month (got expert in swapping them out) and melted 3 heads, the 1200's where not great in getting air into the engine bay lol

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

The "Best" for me is a car that can do everything - tackle a back road with a decent level of "handling"; cruise on the motorway with a decent ride (and economy); a level of performance that rivals a sportscar; space inside for 4 people; decent luggage space; nicely equipped.

Although it will never get 10/10 for any of them the Alpina XD3 does a seriously good job of all of them. It out handled an E60 B5 Touring on the same stretch of road!
