Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

I still remember fondly the first car we bought in Switzerland, a red 1989 BMW 318si. No legroom at all in the back so a right royal PITA with a baby seat, but we loved that car.
Traded it in for a black Opel Astra estate, oh the shame.....

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

the 2nd time I did it so did I when I was older and had the money to do it properly

same 1700 big bore and webbers, bigger cooler, disc brake conversion, boot standoff (although that was after this pic was taken), 6 point harnesses and racing seats, properly lowered, wider wheels and proper tyres lol was still bloody unreliable

29 bhp of raw power. Top speed 117km.

But it could go anywhere and never overheated in quite hot weather:

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

for me its a toss up between a few of the cars I had the pleasure of driving at Palmersport. My favourites are the single seater formula 3 jaguar, the ariel atom (totally bonkers) and the Caterham (what fun, control a luxury!)

My old dolly.

1979 ex-BL demo car, which was bought by an auto mechanic, who tweaked it a bit, and then sold it on to me.
Some years ago, I still found details of it on the interweb - the original white/blacke vinyl roof, had become blue ..... but alas nothing to be found, now.

A real wolf in sheep's clothing.
Regular runs between Woking (Sry.) and Preston (Lancs.) in under 3 hours - best, 2 hrs. 40 mins.

Good fast early morning run, up the A34 (when it was mostly single carriageway), with a Lotus Sunbeam - difficult to say which was best.

Gutted, when I had to sell it quickly and cheap, when I first moved abroad - to someone who seemed to have no idea how to 'drive' it.

Found it .... !!! My actual old dolly - now blue, instead of original white, although black vinyl roof remains. I owned it in the mid-80's ..... 30 years ago!!

Happy and sad all at the same time, and a bit nostalgic for my geezer days .... great car to drive.

Interesting article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/...te-Sprint.html

Photo, apparently from Jun.2012, uploaded in Dec.2013.

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Alfa Romeo 156 2.0. I had driven all Opel Corsas, Astras, Vectras, Safiras and VW Golfs and Polos, and a few random Audis and french more, and once I got into this thing... amazing what a 2.0 liter engine with an surprisingly good sound can feel (and make you smile!). Drove really well in the snow too and left many rearwheelers behind at the lights.

The car is nowadays 15 years old and is still doing well and in the family

Lotus Elan Plus 2 - 1973 JPS Edition

Smells of leather and engine oil. Has a walnut dashboard and still makes it down a country road at a fair old lick. Probably what I miss most from home but I am not sure it is worth the hassle of trying to import it.

Oh, and it has a gold roof

1985 Jaguar XJS

she only came alive long enough to drive about 5 feet down the driveway, but man it was great. I put a ridiculous amount of time and money into that POS.

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

In terms of outright drive - the Rapide S was delightful but a bit nose heavy and not one for absolutely caning. The Aventador felt far more compact than it actually is - and absolutely flies.

I bought my current car because it felt the most organic to drive. Over 300ps per tonne and a race-car derived chassis and suspension setup (with minimal electronic nannys) means it does require a cerebral analogue approach to driving fast.

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Ironically I am not a car person at all...however in my line of work, I was fortunate to drive all manner of fancy cars
from Mclarens

to Bentley's (my own car in the bacground)

to Aston DBS

hummers (which i understand are for people with small peepees)

to Ferrari

and finally hitting 200km/h legally on the bahn in germany in a golf R

out of all of them...the most fun I would say would be the Ferrari as the look on girl's faces is priceless.

the most amazing experience in terms of sheer driving pleasure is definitely the DBS...I would buy it in a heartbeat

WANT!!

There is a Alpina B10 3.5 for sale at the moment - E34 shape - which is very tempting. It puts out 254PS, not huge by modern standards, but pretty tasty back in the day

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

No 1 is a Jensen FF. Often mistaken for an Aston, but is far more exclusive. Dodge Charger power clothed in a hand made Italian leather glove.

Perfect winter car, amazing interior heater. Amazingly effective unobtrusive mechanical traction control (4x4). Will pull Range Rovers out of snow drifts.

No 2 a pre-Cat TVR Griffith, factory gas flowed heads, BRG metal flake, TVR embossed green leather seats, OZ split rim alloys, original factory practically straight through mild steel exhaust. No air bags, no abs, no power steering, no air con. You could blip the throttle, and be it in a multi story car park, or between two neat rows of terraced houses in Southampton the sound vibes would trigger car alarm sensors. The rear view mirror would light up with flashing indicators, you couldn't hear the alarms go off, but you could see the effect. That car made me cry as I drove it home for the first time. It drove like I imagined a proper sports car would, and until that point in my life I thought the UK had lost the plot in terms of cars. It had it's faults, lol. On that first trip home I opened the throttle to loose the cars behind, checked the mirror, couldn't see a thing. The boot had sprung open. lol.

My other car at the time was an ex-Police pursuit vehicle, a Cavalier 4x4 16V 6 speed turbo, wind up windows, disguised as a normal car, with 270ps on tap it was a bit quicker than the TVR once moving, massively quicker A to B on normal UK roads, and looked like your grandad's car.

Jensen gets No 1 though.

I've yet to meet a woman who is impressed by a man driving any ferrari, that look is usually a look of disdain, followed by a comment about manhood

That is on my todo list, I had the ford v6 S2, only 170 bhp but straight through exhausts and of course no cat, I never needed to tell my wife I was on the way home, she could hear the car from a mile away. TVR's interiors are so special car tried to kill me a couple of times, 1st gear off a roundabout in the wet was a very bad idea. no driver aids, no safety, loved it

my actual car as it sat in the showroom
