I thought they ate heads??

A former colleague had one and for 2 years it demonstated Fiat/Citroen/Rover levels of reliability.
All the Police cars had heads cast, not just designed, by Cosworth so I was ok. They had the Coscast logo on a small lip visible for ID. Some warranty claims would have got these heads. Post 2000 a new head gasket was developed. I think the Astra would have had a properly cast head too by then. My coscast head was from mid 90s.

Mmmm .... two words - Audi and Coup.

Most of the engine weight in front of the front axle, so it understeers like a pig - especially on wet roads in a bend.

It's very pretty, but 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds is not too clever. I propose:

It's ginormous -- also over 2,000 kg -- but carries five in exceptional luxury and easily smashes 5.0 sec for 0-100! (2010+ Jaguar XJL 5.0 V8 Supersport -- 510 HP -- one reviewer clocked 4.0 sec flat for the sprint to 100 km/h)
E63S, 3.7secs 0-100km, 585 BHP but can go higher, great fun

Exactly, I could understand if it were the heavenly DS (Godess), but the CX is like most mass produced cars of the early 80s... Ugly

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Best all-rounder most likely the Mercedes CLS 350 CDI Shooting Break I rented from Munich Airport yesterday. Fits the wife in the front, 4 suitcases 2 handluggages a photography kitbag and laptop bag in the rear. 9 speed flappy paddle gearbox and 457 lb/ft of torque. Great on the autobahn.

Otherwise, for track, going back to firsts - my first single-seater experience - a Formula First. No real power but tremendous fun.

... except style and personality.
The quintessential British argument for bad quality products (in my experience is the British engineering ok, but the actual execution of a production the problem...). Low manufacturing quality does not mean "personality". A car that does not start when it's cold is simply crap, not "different". And if you have never driven a Porsche or BMW M-Series do you actually have no idea about car personality in general. Oops, both are German...

My brother in law has a 1980 W116 S-series... which is probably the cheapest of all somewhat classic Benz. Say what you want, but cruising in a golden 80s Benz definitely has personality. Not sure about the style bit...

And getting back to the topic: "best" means fit for purpose. The car which was the absolute top in this perspective was the one I had during college: My purpose was basic transportation in all weather with absolute rock bottom running and repair costs for a period of four years. My Honda Civic (5th Gen) was at that time way better than any Golf or Polo (let alone Opels) of my classmates as it simply never broke down in any way. A bit like the Toyota they once had on top gear... for a large chunk of the population is this much closer to "best" than any 911 GT3RS...

Sorry, Trev, I appreciate your posts in general, but I can't agree with you here. Engineering perfection does not make for style or personality -- that requires something special. Yes, I've driven Porsches and BMWs, and don't like them. I've owned three Mercs, and do like them as near-flawless machines but without a trace of personality. They were all comfortable, efficient conveyers of people and goods. That two of them were ragtops does not change that perception.

Now, by contrast, sitting in the Jaguar evokes a day out on a yacht. There are acres of wood, not just on the doors and dashboard, but all the way around the bottom of the windscreen. Everything is covered in leather, including the head lining and dashboard. Driving at full power actually requires skill, which leads me to another topic: fitness for purpose. If your express purpose for driving a car is to convey passengers and goods between points A and B in comfort, then buy a Mercedes-Benz (or BMW, or Audi, VW or Porsche). If, on the other hand, like me, you choose a car for the sheer fun of driving it and pleasure derived from ownership, then other marques may better fit the bill.

Which car rental place has minimum 5-year-old cars available for rent? Usually I'd expect such establishments to be of the "rent-a-bomb" type.

Vorsprung durch Technik or The Ultimate Driving Machine vs. Grace, Space, Pace. Sums it up quite nicely.
