If your express purpose for driving a car is to convey passengers and goods between points A and B in comfort, then buy a Mercedes-Benz (or BMW, or Audi, VW or Porsche). If, on the other hand, like me, you choose a car for the sheer fun of driving it and pleasure derived from ownership, then other marques may better fit the bill.
Yeah, Porsches has never been about the fun of driving. At all. Only good to transport people (?) from a to b.

But since you measure your fun of driving by the amount of trees cut to build your interior do I guess we will never agree anyway... I measure the personality of a car by the way it drives and handles. The only Jag I have ever driven was from the 90s and cornered like a battleship - even worse than my sisters 80s S-series. My conclusion was "why would anyone possible want one of those" and this has only changed when I saw the f-type... first Jag I genuinely want to own.

Exactly. If you base your view of an entire marque on a sample of 1, you're bound to draw erroneous conclusions.

Clearly, you've never driven either of the Jaguars I've posted in this thread.

Gotta love blind, nationalistic defence of car manufacturers. You'll never catch me promoting Holden.

The F-type drives very well indeed. You can feel it is carrying a little too much lard but the whole package is very well balanced - assuming the F-Type S is the one you pick. The V8, as in pretty much every application in the Jaguar range, is just a little too much for the chassis. The F-Type is considerably better than the XK in this respect but the small engined car has a sweeter balance is far more exploitable, it will adopt a slightly wild corner exit stance with all the electronics switched on should you so wish. The biggest issue I had with the F-Type, in convertible form, is the woeful luggage space, meaning the car lacks a GT-string to its bow - something the 911 can achieve with aplomb. The coupe resolves that issue and has the German beaten for "soul" and looks.

The important thing to remember is that when people are spending 100k++ on a automotive "toy" absolutes don't always win and personality, looks and image become key buying criteria.

JLR have fixed a number of problems with their brands - reliability has improved massively, their engines are now on the market (economy/performance), their cars are visually hugely desirable and the image has been lifted. Where they still need to improve is with the driver interface (infotainment) and reliability. The latter is work in progress but it is much better than 10 years ago.

This sure has personality in my book... and it better does because it won't win on looks... (seriously: ever been in one? Not half as bad as looking at one from the outside...)

Agreed, the touch-screen system is slow and unintuitive. Dual-view TV is pretty cool, though. Infotainment has never been my #1 reason for buying a car (the E-type's DVD player really sucked...).

Reliability hasn't been any sort of an issue for me -- touch (acres of) wood.

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

My first car was French - and came fitted with some delightful lift off oversteer as standard! Then came a series of company cars - Vauxhall, Ford, Rover and finally a Volvo S80.

When I stated owning privately again I bought Swedish or German - I have ticked off BMW (many times), Alpina (many times), Mercedes , VW, Saab and Volvo (many times).

I now have a pair of Brits, both of whom ooze personaility and a little touch of magic. The Disco is about as perfect a piece of all round engineering you could come up with - assuming, even with the diesel, you don't mind rather dismal fuel economy. It is quiet and smooth; thanks to a slight tweak performance is sprightly; it crosses continents with absolute ease; has masses of internal space for passengers and luggage; it shrugs off mud, snow, ice, rain - pretty much everything with aplomb; it laughs at winter; can tow anything, anywhere at proper speeds - it is absolutely bloody fantastic - and without fail every time I think about selling it it just delivers the goods in such a way I can't think of anything better I would rather be in. Apart from fuel, the biggest expense in owning a Disco is Barbour clothing

All cars deliver in different ways:
- I don't think I could have wished for a better car than the 1989 BMW 525 for the 9,000km trip round Morocco
- It is a coin-flip in deciding the better long cruiser - 2007 Saab 9-3 or 2008 Volvo V70
- The Alpina B3 is "the" autobahn-stormer
- Alpina Roadster for combining daily driving ability with a race-style exhaust note
- Passat 2200 for 136ps/1100kg FWD lunacy and 5-pot noise

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

I miss my 1987 Holden VL Calais with a 3 litre Nissan turbo charged motor and 5-speed manual. The motor was amazing and well ahead of it's time.

Problem was, the thing became so rare people kept trying to steal it. So I got reluctantly sold it.

So what would you say if somebody really positively would go British even though all his Swiss friends would tell him how stupid of an idea that is: F-type or Evora S (or an used Aston V8...)?

TVR TVR TVR TVR!!!
The chant I heard in 1999 from the local yobos as I waited to turn right into that delightful outer London council estate where my 1993 Griffith would have to spend its life outside.

Topgear shootout. Porkers, BM's, Caterhams, Astons, the TVR nixes the lot. And before you say the next model year xyz would have won, remember it would have had to face the mighty 4.5 Cebera.

Nice bit here about the engine.

Not my fave car of all time, but I want another really badly.

I'm afraid I am too German to buy a car where the clearance between body panels is so wide that it becomes a design feature...

To be fair though model xyz would have had abs, traction, stability, air bags, side impact protection, so you'd probably live in a crash, the tvr's had bugger all, and if you crashed you'd be eating hospital food if you where very very lucky

I loved my TVR but I was under no illusions what would have happened to me if I'd binned it.

But the 9-3 sucks on curvy Swedish roads (when you find one, which I did), about as good as my old Electra 225 (which was also great for long cruising).

Well, for safety and style there is always the option of a Land Rover with a TVR engine!

Re: What is the best car you have ever driven?

Hijacking the car thread, pardon me...

I have driven "fancy cars" before, but I've never been a car person (I like motorbikes).

Today I drove a Maserati Ghibli, and she's done what no other managed to do before: my perception of cars will never be the same again. It will be hard to appreciate driving any other car now. I am in love!!!

Probably my favourite car was my old 1300E MkI Ford Escort. I bought it from a friend who had restored it and tuned up the engine. I was great fun back in my 'boy racer' days
