Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

Hi All,

We are taking a 10 day vacation to Baecelona this Easter, and I plan to drive as the GPS (set on fastest route) takes me. I welcome any tips / suggestions / sharing of similar experiences.

Thanks

SVA

I've been there last year. Very nice trip. Be prepared for super-expensive Catalonian highways.

Hard to tell. From Basel to Cambrils with a lot of stops (including getting lost in Cap d'Agde) and with average speed of 120kmph (max in Spain) it took me 18 hours. But as I said - we were not in a hurry.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

We did the trip last month with 2 kids and a chi.

It took around 10 hours from Basel to Barcelona. We stop in a b&b around valence, it was breathtaking (the place) we did 5 hours one day, and an other 5 the second day.

For the kids(6 and 3), we had two tablets with films and games. I thought it would be a nightmare but it turns out very smooth and easy.

The chi slept all the way.

The toll cost 75 one way. 150 round trip.

We filled up the tank 4 times round trip.

Could you post the name of the B&B in Valence- it could be useful to any doing that route. Thanks.

Of course SVA can wipe out about 2 hours from your timings- so maybe staying overnight near Nîmes might be better.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

I'm planning to stay o/n at a caminng bugalow in Fontès, 34320, France on the way out; but on the way back i'd like to come bact direct - esp if possible in 8-9 hours. Also, i need to come to Fribourg, anothe 1.5 hours from Basel. So 10 hours exx-Basel is a bit scary. I dont know if i'm (still) up to a 11 hour drive in one day.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

Surely from Fribourg you won't go anywhere near Basel! But go Lausanne-Geneva- Lyon and keep going, no?

Honestly, unless you can share driving it is too far to do in one go- and just gets dangerous. Our max these days is 8 hrs max and that is sharing the driving.

TCS itinéraires says 9h25 mins- but of course you'd need about 3 pee and coffee/food stops of about 20 mins.

Maybe look into taking anticoagulants?
;-)
(If you have an accident, you'll bleed to death a bit quicker, though)

Also depends on the car.

In 2009, my GF and I made a trip around Germany (and some neighboring countries).
On the return, we spent the night in a small place in the Harz (Hahnenklee) and I brought her home to Tübingen, before continuing to my place near Zurich.
It's a 700km trip.
I crawled from my seat into my flat and had to lie down.

That, or the return from Paris (via Tübingen) was the worst.

I have a 60PS VW Lupo. I hope you've got something better.

Normally, I'd split an 8h car-trip into two 4h trips with a big break.

How people travelled to Southern Italy in 1950s' Volkswagen Beetles is beyond my imagination.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

It's a matter of habit. That 18 hours was my longest drive (without sharing). I've done 10-14h several times last year and of course it's exhausting, but not necessarily dangerous.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

For most of us, it would be- nothing worse than that feeling of eyes closing and the loss of awareness for a milli-second. Happened to both of us, despite OH being used to working very long hours and nights. Never again- just not worth it- not for yourself, not for your kids- and not for other road users either. Falling asleep at the wheel kills lots every year, tragically.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

I used to regularly do 8 to 10 hours till five years ago. But yeah, I get the point, on the way back (via Geneva of course), if I feel even a bit 'lazy' I'll check in some place for the night.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

I've used to drive at night but cannot any longer, so for really long all day driving I'm trying to start as early as possible to arrive before midnight and before the next sleep cycle. If I cannot do it, then I'll park and sleep a few hours in a seat; not perfect but then the body finishes its sleep cycle and one can continue.

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

Stay safe, and have a fabulous and well-deserved holiday.

I am amazed how many people we know who drive a very long way on family holidays, and the wives refuse to share any of the driving... even those who drive here every day and like driving. What's this all about- don't get it (irrelevant to the OP though- as he will be the only driver).

Re: Driving to Barcelona with kids and dog - tips for the route?

I've done it several times (with kids and dogs). The route shown on googlemaps is pretty much the fastest I've found. Boring drive so best to get it over with quickly. Unless you have time, then there are plenty of nice places to explore if you get off the highway.

Depending on the age of the kids, you could do it in one shot or break it up into two days. When I'm going solo with just the dogs, I'll stay at an Ibis (Montpelier, Beziers, Narbonne or Perpignan). Cheap and easy access. If I'm traveling with the rest of the family, Mercure or Novotel. Still cheap but a bit more comfortable than Ibis and also easy access (usually right next door to the Ibis motels).

Best suggestion which I just recently discovered: Books on tape. The hours fly by if you find a good book to listen to. Another good choice would be the following podcast: This American Life-Serial. When I drove the route at Christmas, I had planned to stop earlier but I kept driving until 1 in the morning as I wanted to keep listening. Made my drive the following day a couple hours shorter.

The biggest challenge will be to keep the kids entertained. Good luck with that.

I don't know about better, but definitely spacious. Also 145 bhp (I dont know how much that is in PS) should be fine, I guess.

I can also recommend Montpelier. Very nice city, and not that expensive.

So 7 hours approx from Geneva is good? The kids are both in their teens, and the challenge is to get them to interact a bit - I'm more worried about myboredom
